How Companies are Giving Back to their Communities - 2023 banner image

How Companies are Giving Back to their Communities - 2023

With the holiday season quickly approaching, we wanted to connect with companies across the tech scene to see how they are taking part and giving back to their communities.

At Amwell, we are deeply committed to giving back to our communities through our corporate social responsibility program, Amwell Cares. Our program strives to educate our employees and drive change on a global scale, focusing on important initiatives such as hunger relief, sustainability, and promoting health equity. Together, as One Team, we have organized food drives, launched company match programs, created kits and made blankets for hospitalized children, as well as encouraged employees to get moving to earn donations to their charities of choice, and much more. Amwell Cares has also provided free digital care services in response to mass shootings and natural disasters to ensure everyone has access to the care they need when disaster strikes. Using Amwell’s ‘Day of Service’ benefit, employees also logged more than 400 hours in 2022.

In October 2023, twenty students from business and tech tracks at Charlestown High came for a visit to the SmartBear office in Somerville, through the company’s relationship with Boston Private Industry Council (PIC). Employees gave short job talks on everything from Product Management to Sales to IT,  mentored the students in a group project (creating some great app designs), and had lunch with them. SmartBear CEO, Frank Roe, even stopped by to talk about a day in the life of a CEO. It was truly a wonderful experience for the students and the employees.

Through the Seismic Cares Program, our employees have an opportunity to participate in locally organized volunteer events with non-profit organizations around the globe. These events allow room for employees to connect within our Seismic community while also making a difference in the communities where we live and work. Throughout 2023, we held 14 Seismic Cares events across all of our offices, including a recent visit to the Animal Rescue League of Boston. In addition to volunteering, Seismic also matches employees’ personal donations (up to a certain amount per year) to eligible non-profit organizations!

The VentureFizz Podcast: John Simon - Co-Founder & Board Chair of the GreenLight Fund & Managing Director of Sigma Prime Ventures

Episode #313 of The VentureFizz Podcast features John Simon, Co-Founder & Board Chair of the GreenLight Fund and Managing Director of Sigma Prime Ventures.

Thanksgiving is not only a special holiday because of the time with your family, all the great food, and of course, football, but it is also a time when lots of people volunteer and give back.

Thus, the timing of this interview with John couldn’t have been more perfect as we head into the Thanksgiving holiday.

Most people know of John as an entrepreneur and investor, as he was the founder of a company that went public and was a co-founder of General Catalyst and has since been with Sigma Prime.

But what many people might not know is the philanthropic side of his background.

John is the co-founder of the GreenLight Fund, a national nonprofit network matching local communities’ unmet needs with evidence-based social innovations. The organization takes a unique approach which is similar to how a VC firm operates where each city that it supports raises its own fund and decides on what strategic investments will have the greatest impact.

In this episode of our podcast, we cover:

  • Advice for founders on how to incorporate a social mission into their company or a culture of giving back.
  • John's background story and how he started his career in venture capital in the earlier days of the industry.
  • Starting and scaling UroMed Corporation to an IPO.
  • The story of how General Catalyst got started and his experience as a Venture Capitalist at Sigma Prime Ventures.
  • What led John and his co-founder, Margaret Hall, down the path of starting the GreenLight Fund, plus how their model works and the impact it has had on various cities.
  • Advice for entrepreneurs on how to build a company of lasting value.
  • Why he has focused on investing in founders who are uniquely qualified and have world-leading domain experience to solve problems.
  • And so much more.

The VentureFizz Podcast: Ben McKean - Founder & CEO of Hungryroot banner image

The VentureFizz Podcast: Ben McKean - Founder & CEO of Hungryroot

Episode #312 of The VentureFizz Podcast features Ben McKean, Founder & CEO of Hungryroot.

I don’t mind shopping for groceries but my problem is that I’m a creature of habit and I tend to purchase the same things over and over again. Plus, I am terrible about meal planning, so after doing a full shop there is still “nothing to eat.”

I guess I’m not the only one. As Ben and I discuss, on average, consumers spend 2-3 hours a week grocery shopping. 75% of what we buy at the grocery store are the same items as the week before and 20-30% of what is purchased at the grocery store is thrown away and wasted.

Terrible.

So, what if you could have a service that cuts that shopping time down to 2-3 minutes a week, plans the meals for you, creates the list of ingredients that is only 10% of what you purchased the week before, and delivers it to your home!

Sounds dreamy right… well, say hello to Hungryroot.

Hungryroot is the only grocery and recipe delivery service designed to make healthy eating easy, personal, and sustainable. The company is profitable with revenues of $182M for the first six months of this year all while building a “relatively speaking” capital efficient business.

In this episode of our podcast, we cover:

  • Ben’s background story and how entrepreneurship was part of his DNA from an early age including starting a company at 18 years old that was ultimately acquired.
  • The details about Savored which helped restaurants book empty tables using dynamic pricing which was acquired by Groupon.
  • The full story about Hungryroot which evolved from selling its own line of food products and how they pivoted to a grocery service and using AI at its core since 2019.
  • His lastest entrepreneurial side project called Every which is an app focused on enhancing human experiences and fostering deeper connections among individuals.
  • Advice on creating and scaling a consumer business.
  • And so much more.
