CMT is looking for a collaborative, customer-committed, and creative Senior Director of Embedded Systems Engineering to lead the development of embedded software and firmware for next-generation IoT devices integrating cutting-edge mobile sensing, mobile applications, and cloud-based software. The Senior Director of Embedded Systems Engineering will work closely with Hardware Engineering, QA, Cloud Engineering, Data Science, and Product Management to ensure successful execution of the IoT product roadmap.
Responsibilities
- Define and drive the execution of a software and firmware development roadmap aligned with company objectives, customer needs, and overall business goals.
- Establish systems, processes, and infrastructure to support regular high-quality software and firmware releases while driving continuous improvement.
- Lead, mentor, and grow a team of embedded software and firmware engineers, driving team development through career growth and fostering a high-performing culture. Manage daily operations, task assignments, and project timelines to ensure timely deliverables and a smooth workflow.
- Collaborate with Hardware Engineering leadership to guide development teams through design, prototyping, debugging, and testing, ensuring alignment between software and hardware components.
- Develop and standardize workflows, processes, configuration management, and quality assurance methodologies to enhance efficiency and maintain high-quality deliverables.
- Work closely with hardware engineers to select appropriate components that meet customer requirements.
- Oversee documentation, including software/firmware release notes and procedures, using tools like JIRA, ensuring thorough and accurate communication of technical details.
- Lead and manage the QA team, ensuring high standards of quality and consistency across the product lifecycle, while fostering collaboration between QA and embedded teams.
Qualifications
- Bachelors degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent years of experience and/or certification. An advanced degree is a plus.
- 10+ years of experience in embedded software/firmware engineering, with a deep understanding of embedded systems development and architecture.
- 5+ years of experience leading software/firmware teams through product deployment cycles, driving complex, multi-departmental projects to successful completion.
- Proven ability to lead large teams in high-growth environments, focusing on team building, motivation, and technical and interpersonal excellence.
- Exceptional emotional intelligence with the ability to manage, mentor, and motivate individuals at all levels of the organization.
- Extensive experience with team-based firmware development processes, software tools, technical specification development, formal design reviews, and documentation standards.
- Solid understanding of agile methodologies (Agile, Kanban, Scrum) with experience adapting them to larger teams and cross-functional projects.
- Ability to manage multiple projects in an environment with aggressive deadlines and evolving requirements.
- Proven success in driving organizational change and performance management at the senior leadership level, with experience raising the bar for team performance and navigating through ambiguity.
- Strong conflict resolution skills and the ability to lead teams collaboratively.
- Humility and a willingness to acknowledge mistakes and learn from them.
