Liberty Mutual
Consultant, Product Research (Small Commercial)
Job Description
Description
The Small Commercial Line of Business Management team plays a pivotal role in building market-leading products and experiences and guiding the strategy for each small commercial line of business. This role will sit at the intersection of Property technical expertise and strategic P&L leadership, focusing primarily on countrywide Property analytics, product strategy, and performance management.
Under general direction, this individual will serve as a key driver of both profit and growth objectives — conducting moderate to highly complex analysis, guiding product decisions, and leading cross-functional workstreams that execute on the Small Commercial strategic vision. This role will partner with teams across Small Commercial to influence the strategic approach to expanding our new BOP product to additional industries and enabling new coverages, with Property as the foundational line of expertise.
The ideal candidate is a naturally curious, analytically minded leader with deep Property line technical knowledge, a strong track record of guiding P&L performance, and the ability to translate data and market insights into compelling strategies and business cases for senior leadership.
Candidates who live within 50 miles of our Boston, Portsmouth, Columbus, Plano or Seattle offices will be on-site two days per week.
Responsibilities
Property P&L & Performance Management
- Guide the P&L for the Property line within the Small Commercial portfolio in partnership with State teams, monitoring performance metrics and identifying actionable recommendations to drive profitability and growth
- Perform complex analyses to evaluate trends in user experience, contract and product performance across the Property, providing tactical and strategic recommendations
- Query data to conduct ad hoc and formal analysis of key metrics, serving as the primary point person for moderate to highly complex Property-focused analyses
Strategy & Product Development
- Support line of business strategy by managing cross-functional projects to meet growth and profit objectives within both new product builds and existing Property products
- Consult on complex business issues and design considerations, including researching, identifying, and proposing changes to Property product offerings
- Assist in conducting competitive intelligence and monitoring market trends, competitor filings, and industry developments utilizing various sources
- May assist in creating new product concepts and provide direct input into Property product strategies
Leadership & Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Lead own or cross-functional workstreams on medium to long-term or moderate to high complexity projects within the Property space
- Build tools and repeatable queries for cross-functional partners and less experienced analysts to leverage
- Develop and deliver presentations to communicate technical ideas and analytical findings to stakeholders, including Small Commercial executive leadership and occasionally the Chief Product Officer, in a clear and concise manner
- Actively share job knowledge, lead job shadow discussions, and may create and own training materials or formal training sessions
- May manage ADPs or interns and may be assigned to mentor new hires
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Insurance, Business, Finance, Economics, Statistics, or other quantitative field
- Minimum 4 years of work experience, typically 6+ years, in commercial insurance product management, underwriting, or strategy — with demonstrated Property line technical expertise
- Proven experience guiding or influencing P&L outcomes for a Property or related commercial insurance line of business
- Strong working knowledge of Small Commercial products, including Property and Businessowners Policy (BOP)
- Advanced proficiency in Excel and PowerPoint
- Proficiency in data analysis tools such as SAS, SQL, Snowflake, and/or Power BI
