In this video, Andrew discusses:
Who is Motional?
Motional is a global leader in driverless technology formed as a joint venture between Aptiv and Hyundai. The company develops fully autonomous vehicles for ride-hailing and delivery applications, maintaining industry-leading partnerships with Lyft and Uber to deploy robotaxis across their networks.
What traits define the Motional company culture?
Motional seeks individuals who excel in collaboration and work seamlessly with others. They value self-motivated candidates who constantly strive for personal growth and continuous improvement. The company offers numerous ownership opportunities, allowing anyone who joins to make a significant impact across multiple teams.
What candidate backgrounds does Motional look for?
Motional looks for highly specialized backgrounds, particularly in engineering. Relevant domain knowledge can span robotics, automotive software, hardware testing, and more. Key hiring areas include motion planning, controls, perception, and machine learning. Candidates should have experience conducting research, building algorithms, and writing high-quality software within a shared codebase. Engineering applicants should also stay current with advancements in programming languages, such as knowing modern C++ features from versions 11 through 20.
What is the Motional interview process?
The interview process generally consists of three distinct rounds:
The first round is a hiring manager interview to evaluate how your background aligns with the position. Candidates should review their resume, past projects, and the job description beforehand.
The second round is a live, collaborative coding interview with a team member that focuses on data structures, algorithms, and unit testing.
The third round is a panel interview consisting of three to five sessions. This stage assesses the breadth and depth of your domain knowledge in areas critical to the role. Motional provides a 20 dollar lunch voucher during this intensive loop and aims to deliver feedback within 24 to 48 hours of completion. Upon extending an offer, recruiters can arrange additional calls with technical team members to answer remaining questions.
How can job seekers stand out to Motional recruiters?
To succeed, applicants should present an easy-to-read resume and thoroughly research the company and specific role prior to the first conversation. Maintaining a positive attitude and practicing technical skills are vital. Candidates should come prepared with insightful questions to understand the team dynamics and how they can make an impact. Finally, applicants should clearly communicate why they want to work in the autonomous vehicle industry and explain what drives them to shape the future of safer, smarter, and more sustainable transportation.
