The Director of Residence Life is a full-time professional staff member who assumes responsibility for managing the day-to-day operation of a 500-bed residence hall (Hult House) at the Boston campus. This includes the management of full-time and part-time professional staff members as well as responsibility for the paraprofessional student leader team. The role includes budget oversight and requires proficiency in collaborative project management, relationship management with internal and external stakeholders, and a strong focus on student development, programming, and the customer experience.
GENERAL
The Director of Residence Life is charged with developing a community that promotes community engagement, learning, respect for diversity, and student success. The Director of Residence Life plays an integral role in developing and implementing a residential curriculum that complements Hult International Business Schools mission and extends student learning beyond the classroom. This role is integral in connecting the residential experience with the student life journey. This is a live on optional role
Minimum Qualifications: Bachelors degree and previous residence life experience is required. Master's degree in college student personnel or higher education administration and both supervisory and programming experience is strongly preferred.
SPECIFIC DUTIES
Administrative
- Manage daily operations of the 500-bed residence hall (Hult House).
- Maintain occupancy rosters and manage housing operations, assignments, key control, and inventory.
- Develop and implement hall opening and closing procedures.
- Attend meetings, including but not limited to staff meetings, committee meetings, and one-on-one meetings. Serve on campus specific or institutional level committees as requested.
- Collaborate with the Director of Marketing and Sales to manage summer housing program operations for internal and external constituents, including but not limited to student housing, external programs, and summer conferences.
- Fiscally responsible for residence hall operational and programming budgets.
- Maintain administrative and informational records.
- Collaborate with finance team to facilitate student account charges.
- Collaborate with sales and marketing representative on the marketing, occupancy planning, sales/booking, and pre-arrival communication/move-in logistics.
- Strong technology skills, including proficiency in web-based programs, Microsoft Office, and email communication.
- Collaborate with campus partners including academics, coaching, student services, and counseling teams to support student success.
- Interview, select, train, supervise, and evaluate full-time staff members which may include Residence Life Coordinators and/or a Residence Life Manager, a full-time or part-time Mail Room Coordinator, as well as part-time (Student Leaders) paraprofessional Resident Assistants and Desk Attendants.
- Delegate direct advising and supervisory responsibility for the student leaders to members of the full-time professional staff and coach them on all areas of management, coaching, and skill development.
- Hold staff accountable for meeting performance expectations, including responsibilities outlined in the residential curriculum.
- Provide staff members guidance about broader institutional and residence life policies and procedures.
- Establish a strong, positive learning environment within the residential area and the Hult community.
- Work with students in developing floor/building communities that are supportive for high academic achievement, community pride, a celebration of diversity, cross-cultural understanding, and professional integrity.
- Provide leadership in creating a community that supports students of underrepresented and diverse populations as well as those from all identities and backgrounds.
- Educate staff and students to self-enforce policies and respect the rights of others through community standards.
- Develop and advise a Hult House Council (HHC).
- Provide training and resource information to full-time staff, resident assistants, and the HHC in program development and implementation.
- Attend all HHC meetings and provide direction and information on Hult policies and procedures.
- Encourage maximum participation of residents in HHC and Hult House programs.
Student Development
- Lead to the development and facilitation of the residential curriculum.
- Serve as a partner in the student's total development and seamless navigation of the student journey by collaborating with: Academics, Student Services, Student Coaches, Careers, Counseling, Student Conduct, Finance, Operations, Campus Security, Dining, and other teams as necessary.
- Facilitate leadership opportunities and support all students in leadership development, specifically leadership events sponsored by residence life.
- Partner with the conduct team to see that the student conduct process serves as an educational tool.
- Assist with strategies designed to retain students, grow and sustain housing occupancy, and graduate students in a timely fashion.
- Follow up on all health, safety, and wellness matters and address student conduct concerns in an educational and timely manner with appropriate documentation as needed.
- Work collaboratively with Security, Student Conduct, and Student Affairs teams.
- Refer student mental health concerns to appropriate resources and maintain thorough documentation.
- Complete Behavior and Safety Plans and Student Expectations Meetings as appropriate.
- Engage campus partners including wellness and counseling, conduct team, academics, coaching, and student affairs in creating success for students when/if appropriate.
- Serve in an on-call duty rotation for both Residence Life (Hult House) and the Boston Campus Emergency Team.
- Provide crisis management support and intervention, which may be required on weekends, at night, etc.
- Coordinate emergency response plans and procedures; provide staff and resident education on plans and procedures, i.e., power outage, evacuation drills, medical emergencies, campus threats, etc.
- Monitor all public area facilities for cleanliness, safety, and student experience/utilization needs.
- Submit work orders for facility needs not covered by residents and follow up on routine facility cleanliness and maintenance concerns.
- Maintain positive working relationship with housekeeping and facilities personnel.
- Coordinate and supervise proper usage of dining areas and other public spaces when used for programs and activities.
- Monitor residential life furnishings and equipment, if applicable.
- Support residence life, student affairs, and institutional strategic planning initiatives, mission, vision and educational priorities.
- Contribute to a comprehensive assessment plan that encompasses satisfaction, retention, and student learning goals.
- Utilize assessment and benchmarking survey data to lead evidence-based enhancements in the development of community, programming, facilities, wellness and support services for students, the department and self.
- While performing staff supervision, community building and education, health and safety and facilities management duties of this position, the employee is required to access all floors and public areas of the building(s) on a weekly basis.
- Reasons for floor and building access may include but are not limited to facility and safety inspections, emergency response, student policy violations and safety concerns, staff member observation, and availability and outreach to residents.
- In emergency situations, the Director of Residence Life must be able to respond in a timely and appropriate manner.
- The employee is frequently required to utilize the computer and phone.
