Symbotic
Electrical Engineer
Job Description
What we need
Symbotic is seeking an Electrical Engineer to design electrical hardware for automated material-handling robots and related platforms. In this role you will contribute to the schematic design, PCB layout, analysis, prototype support, integration, and test of assigned electrical designs — boards, harnesses, and the interfaces that connect them — from design through release.
You will carry assigned work through Symbotic’s Product Development Process (PDP). You will apply established design practices, broaden your capability in the discipline, and partner with more senior electrical designers and with mechanical, firmware, test, and manufacturing so those designs can be built and tested.
What we do
The Electrical Engineering – Bot Hardware team is part of Symbotic’s Hardware Engineering organization and develops the electrical hardware that powers and connects our robotic systems. Our team designs PCB-based electronics, harnesses, and electrical interfaces that support power distribution, sensing, compute, communications, and control across our automation platforms. We partner closely with mechanical, firmware, test, manufacturing, and other engineering teams to integrate these designs into reliable, manufacturable robotic products and support them from development through production.
What you'll do
- Design electrical solutions of moderate scope for assigned boards, harnesses, and interfaces (power, sensing, compute interfaces, interconnect, and grounding), using established methods and precedent, and asking for guidance when the assignment is new.
- Take assigned designs from schematic through prototype and release: schematic capture, PCB layout, bring-up support, and the documentation needed for review and release.
- Follow the PDP on your work — design reviews, requirements, verification, and release discipline — so assigned designs move on the same path as the rest of the program.
- Design schematics and PCB layouts in Altium for assigned boards. Execute placement, routing, and DFM, and apply the stackup, SI/PI, and EMC practices already used on the platform, with review from a more senior designer.
- Apply DfX (DFM, DFA, DFT, and related) so assigned designs are manufacturable and testable at the contract manufacturer.
- Support PLM work for assigned items (BOM updates, ECO inputs, document release) and support contract-manufacturer builds.
- Contribute to requirements and test procedures, and execute the testing needed to confirm function of the assigned design, including support of EMC/EMI debug with a more senior engineer.
- Investigate issues in the lab and implement corrective changes on assigned designs, with support on failures that extend beyond the board.
- Select components within approved-part and design practices for robotics, automation, and automotive-class environments.
- Give informal guidance to less experienced colleagues on day-to-day design tasks.
- Travel occasionally to the lab, a contract manufacturer, or a site to support bring-up of assigned hardware.
What you'll need
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.
- 2+ years of electrical design experience, or equivalent experience that shows the same capability.
- Working knowledge of Altium schematic capture and PCB layout (or equivalent ECAD, with a demonstrated willingness to work in Altium).
- Experience with electronics for automation, robotics, automotive, or similar embedded systems.
- Contributes to board-level design and to interfaces with the larger electrical system (power distribution, grounding, sensors, and interconnect), with guidance on system-level tradeoffs.
- Awareness of safety expectations on automation and robotic platforms, and ability to follow product safety requirements with guidance from Functional Safety.
- Working knowledge of EMC/EMI fundamentals (grounding, filtering, return paths, and layout practices) and ability to support debug.
- Applies DfX so assigned designs can be built and tested.
- Able to follow a formal PDP / phase-gate process, with moderate guidance on new assignments and little instruction on day-to-day work.
- Familiarity with PLM and with contract-manufacturer builds, or a clear ability to learn those practices on the job.
- Builds productive working relationships and explains technical information clearly to teammates who know the subject.
- Works collaboratively with mechanical, firmware, test, operations, and supply chain in a results-oriented, project-driven team.
Physical and Environment Requirements
- Wilmington, MA preferred (lab and cross-functional presence). Occasional travel to contract manufacturers, test facilities, or sites as required.
- Lab and occasional warehouse / site work around automated equipment.
