Overview of CloudZero Engineering Team Structure
CloudZero maintains an engineering organization of approximately 50 professionals. The department is structured into cross-functional product teams composed of six to eight engineers, an engineering manager, a product manager, and a product designer. These autonomous teams hold end-to-end ownership over features, driving the lifecycle through initial research, design, implementation, quality assurance, cloud deployment, and long-term operational support.
Technical Challenges at CloudZero
The core engineering challenge at CloudZero centers around a high-volume data platform that ingests petabytes of data every month. This data is collected from major cloud service providers, software-as-a-service platforms, and artificial intelligence infrastructure vendors. Engineering teams are tasked with organizing and normalizing this data into granular, actionable insights. Key technical focus areas include building machine learning models for anomaly detection and developing highly personalized data pipelines.
The CloudZero Tech Stack and Architecture
CloudZero operates a software-as-a-service platform built natively on Amazon Web Services. The engineering organization adopted a fully serverless architecture, meaning there are zero containers or virtual machines running in production. The infrastructure is built using scalable, event-driven components including AWS Lambda, Step Functions, DynamoDB, S3, EventBridge, and API Gateway. The backend ecosystem is built entirely on Python, with independent GitHub repositories for each service supporting a continuous integration and continuous deployment pipeline that deploys to production daily. The frontend application is written completely in TypeScript.
The CloudZero Engineering Interview Process
The interview pipeline for technical roles at CloudZero follows a clear three-stage sequence:
- Initial discovery conversations with the internal recruiting team and the hiring manager to discuss past engineering experience and role expectations.
- A flexible, untimed technical take-home assignment that requires candidates to manipulate and analyze data using code.
- A final round comprising four separate one-on-one interviews with engineering peers, focusing on system design, a review of the take-home code, and problem-solving culture alignment.
