Cambridge Mobile Telematics is the world’s largest smartphone telematics provider. The company is a prominent anchor in the Boston-Cambridge technology ecosystem, combining academic research with large-scale commercial application to analyze driving behavior, reduce risk, and improve road safety.

Academic Origins and Mission of Cambridge Mobile Telematics

CMT began as an academic obsession of two MIT professors, Hari Balakrishnan and Sam Madden, who remain active with the company while continuing their professor roles. The founding mission of the organization is to leverage mobile sensors to understand driving data, differentiate safer drivers, and actively help people drive better to save lives.

CMT operates a comprehensive, proprietary full-stack engineering pipeline:

  • Hardware Design: CMT designs its own IoT hardware and selects custom accelerometers.

CMT manages an immense data pipeline that presents unique signal processing and artificial intelligence challenges:

  • Data Modalities: Engineers work with rich, multi-modal sensor inputs including accelerometer, gyroscope, speed, and map data.
  • Classification Problems: A primary technical challenge is distinguishing driver from passenger, and identifying transport types like cars, buses, trains, boats, or skiing based on the physics of movement.
  • Scale of Data: The company stores over 100 petabytes of driving data, representing a distance equivalent to approximately a tenth of a lightyear.
  • AI Foundation Models: CMT is currently building and pre-training its own proprietary AI foundation model from scratch, utilizing their massive database to predict crash detection and risk levels with unprecedented accuracy.
