How to Land a Job at Openly

In This Video

We want to demystify the hiring process, so we connected with Donnie Watson, Director, Talent Acquisition, to give you the inside scoop on how to land a job at Openly.

In this video, Donnie discusses:

Who is Openly?

Openly is a tech-enabled insurance provider founded in 2017 that sells high-end homeowners insurance exclusively through independent agents to mass affluent customers across more than 20 states. It is a remote-first company with over 300 employees distributed across more than 40 states. Openly recently raised 100 million dollars in Series D funding to support its ongoing growth.

What types of candidates does Openly look for?

Because Openly is a tech-enabled insurance provider, it hires for a wide variety of roles requiring different levels of technical skills and insurance experience. Some roles require deep knowledge in both areas, while others require no domain experience at all. Alongside technical capabilities, Openly places significant value on soft skills and looks for candidates who embrace its core values: integrity, empathy, teamwork, curiosity, and urgency.

What is the standard Openly interview process?

The standard non-technical hiring process at Openly begins with a conversation with a member of the talent acquisition team. This is followed by video calls with the hiring manager, peers, cross-functional team members, and an executive interview if required. For technical roles, candidates also complete a technical interview, a coding challenge, and a code review after meeting with the hiring manager. Openly also uses a candidate experience platform to provide insights and expectations for each step so applicants can prepare properly.

How can you make your application stand out at Openly?

Candidates are highly encouraged to submit their resume in a PDF format to preserve formatting and make it easier for the hiring team to review. Resumes should explicitly highlight accomplishments and measurable results rather than just listing past job responsibilities. Applicants should also research Openly and the specific role beforehand, prepare thoughtful questions to assess mutual fit, and provide concrete examples of how their experiences align with the position.

What is the company culture like at Openly?

Openly stands out for its people-first culture, which emphasizes transparency, authentic self-expression, and continuous learning. Employees can access professional development funds and participate in a dedicated DEI committee. As a remote-first company, Openly provides resources for remote work success, including a home office setup stipend. Additionally, Openly prioritizes work-life balance through initiatives like its Be Well program.
