What we need
As an Industrial Engineer, Commissioning Services (IECS), you will be key in assisting with the installation, commissioning, and testing of PLC (Programmable Logic Controllers)-controlled equipment and system integration at customer sites. You will focus on improving Symbotic's site commissioning services processes, assisting in project resource management, and analyzing operational performance for continuous improvement.

The commissioning team plays a crucial role in ensuring the successful deployment of robotic systems. They are responsible for overseeing the beginning and final stages of system integration, testing, and optimization before the automation solution is put into operation. This team works closely with engineers and technicians to fine-tune robotics and automation systems, ensuring they meet performance standards, safety regulations, and customer requirements. Their expertise in troubleshooting, calibration, and quality control helps Symbotic deliver efficient and reliable robotic solutions to clients across various industries.
What you’ll do

Assist in the commissioning of HMI systems, establishing connections with PLCs to ensure proper communication and functionality across customer systems.

Conduct basic hardware testing to verify system performance and ensure it meets project specifications and industry standards.

Perform system functionality tests to ensure integration with the customer’s Warehouse Management System (WMS), identifying issues and reporting findings.

Utilize basic diagnostic tools to identify and resolve hardware and software issues, with guidance from senior team members, to maintain project timelines.

Develop a strong understanding of the software and hardware used in commissioning activities, with ongoing learning and training to improve proficiency in relevant tools and systems.

Support the startup, commissioning, and testing of PLC-controlled equipment at customer locations, following project deadlines and quality expectations.

Participate in system integration testing of Symbotic adapter cells, storage solutions, and safety systems, assisting in ensuring full integration with customer WMS interfaces.

Assist in executing tasks outlined in the Commissioning Services Scope of Work (SOW), such as control cabinet startup, software loading, configuration, and performance validation, under supervision.

Collaborate with cross-functional teams (engineering, software, customer support) to help ensure a smooth commissioning process and provide technical support as needed.

Assist in the commissioning of PLC controllers, ensuring proper configuration for customer sites with guidance from more experienced team members.

Support the commissioning of HMI systems, helping to ensure connection and integration with PLCs.

Perform hardware testing, ensuring systems are functioning per project specifications and customer requirements, with assistance from senior team members.

Participate in system functionality testing, ensuring full integration with the customer’s WMS, and suggest adjustments to meet requirements based on guidance.

Use diagnostic tools to help troubleshoot and resolve hardware or software issues under the guidance of senior engineers.
What you’ll need

Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, Robotics, Industrial Engineering, or a related field preferred.

Minimum 5 years of experience in operations, project management, quality management, or facility management.

Experience in construction or facility-related projects, partnering with both internal teams and external stakeholders.

Proven experience managing medium to large-scale projects and teams with expertise in scheduling complex work, handling dependencies, and driving production.

Experience with high-level scheduling and managing multiple projects simultaneously.

Strong leadership abilities, with a proven ability to build rapport across teams and functions.

Our environment

Remote, field-based position.
-
Travel is required up to 75% of the time. Employees must have a valid driver’s license and the ability to drive and/or fly to client and other customer locations.

The employee is responsible for owning a credit card and managing expenses personally to be reimbursed on a bi-weekly basis.

Our main office is in Wilmington, MA. The person taking this position will be required to perform work at our customer installation locations for extended periods of time where equipment is installed and ready for commissioning.

The employee is frequently required to walk and reach with hands and arms.

The employee is routinely required to work at heights of up to 45 feet and within restrictive areas of 24 inches.

The employee will regularly stand; climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.

The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

Must comply with all safety requirements and protocols, including without limitation Lock out tag out safety protocols and fall protection safety protocols.

Approximately 75% of time will be spent on a construction site with PPE required (hard hat, safety vest, steel toes, eyeglasses, ear protection, fall protection (e.g., safety harness).

There will be steep stairs to climb into the structure. You may be required to routinely walk up and down stairs to navigate the automation structure.

You will regularly be near railings that are high off the ground.

Subject to environmental conditions, protection from weather conditions but not necessarily temperature changes. Must be capable of working in temperatures ranging from 105° to 32° Fahrenheit.
