Job Description

About the Role

Labviva is looking for a hands-on Engineering Manager to lead our Orders Team, responsible for the end-to-end order lifecycle in our growing scientific marketplace. This role blends technical leadership with people management—you’ll guide a team of talented engineers while actively contributing to the codebase and architecture. You will play a critical role in shaping the future of how scientists and procurement teams order equipment, chemicals, and supplies through Labviva. You’ll be accountable for our orders processing systems, which lies at the heart of Labviva’s platform.

This is an exciting opportunity for someone who thrives in fast-paced environments, enjoys mentoring and developing engineers, and wants to make a direct impact through both leadership and code.

This role is based out of our corporate headquarters office in Boston. We are a flexible hybrid environment with 3 days a week (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday) in the office. Please note that we are only accepting candidates that reside in the greater Boston area.

What you will do

  • Lead and grow a high-performing team of fullstack engineers—coaching, mentoring, and supporting their development.
  • Contribute hands-on to the design, development, and deployment of key order processing, order management, and integration systems.
  • Own the team’s roadmap and execution, aligning engineering efforts with product and business priorities.
  • Drive technical excellence, ensuring solutions are scalable, secure, observable, and maintainable.
  • Foster a collaborative, inclusive engineering culture that values innovation, transparency, and continuous improvement.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with Product, Design, and other Engineering teams to build seamless, reliable order history and order management experiences.
  • Lead architectural discussions and decision-making for event-driven microservices and complex third-party integrations.

What you will bring

  • Proven experience managing and mentoring engineers, while remaining technically hands-on in a fullstack environment.
  • Strong Node.js / JavaScript / TypeScript skills, including backend frameworks like NestJS, and frontend tools like React and Next.js.
  • Experience building event-driven architectures using Kafka or similar technologies.
  • Proficiency with PostgreSQL and data modeling best practices.
  • Experience deploying applications to cloud platforms (AWS preferred) and managing infrastructure with Kubernetes.
  • A strong sense of ownership and accountability for systems your team builds and maintains.
  • An ability to balance delivery and quality in a fast-moving, agile team.
  • Experience in e-commerce or supply chain management is a strong plus
