Chewy
Senior Packaging Engineer
Job Description
At Chewy, it is our mission to become the most trusted and convenient online destination for pet parents and our partners – vets and service providers – alike. Our success is measured by the happiness of the people and pets we serve, not simply by the amount of pet supplies we deliver. That’s why we continue to think of outside-the-Chewy-box ways to delight, surprise, and thank our loyal pet lovers!
Our Opportunity:
Chewy is looking for a passionate and customer-obsessed Senior Packaging Engineer to join our dynamic Delivery Experience team. In this role, you will take ownership of critical packaging initiatives that directly impact the way our customers experience Chewy—from Private Brands packaging to vendor collaboration, value-added services (VAS) strategy, and support for distribution and cold chain packaging solutions. We’re seeking a detail-oriented and creative professional who thrives in a fast-paced environment and is eager to make a tangible difference. The ideal candidate will bring strong technical packaging expertise, analytical acumen, and a collaborative mindset to deliver innovative and sustainable packaging solutions. You’ll work alongside a passionate, entrepreneurial team dedicated to delighting pet parents across the country.
What You'll Do
- Partner with the Chewy Private Label team and Chewy vendors to create primary packaging suitable for the ecommerce shipping environment.
- Assess and transform Chewy’s VAS (value-added services) packaging strategy.
- Develop custom physical material tests, packaging tests, and other test protocols in addition to utilizing existing industry standards (ISTA and ASTM).
- Launch new distribution packaging initiatives in collaboration with operations teams, and work with analytics partners to measure success and ensure compliance.
- Partner with merchandising, suppliers, and testing partners to continuously improve on the Chewy delivery experience.
- Collaborate with systems and technical teams to enable new capabilities as part of Chewy’s fulfilment strategy.
- Reduce damages and cost through testing and analysis of defect drivers in packaging, dunnage, and more.
- Support the pharmacy and cold chain packaging programs as needed.
- Assist analytics group with supply chain projects and initiatives outside of packaging as required.
- Improve Customer Experience (CX) by continually raising the capability of Chewy Supply Chain.
What You'll Need
- Bachelor’s degree in Packaging Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Supply Chain Management, or a related field from a leading institution.
- Minimum 6 years (or 5 for master’s degree/MBA) experience in packaging for CPG, food, beverage, retail, or e-commerce companies.
- Strong ability to translate packaging design into measurable performance metrics (e.g., concessions, damages) and troubleshoot fulfillment-related issues.
- Familiarity with the cost and operational impact of packaging designs, from development through execution in fulfillment centers.
- Proven ability to work cross-functionally to ensure the seamless development, testing, and rollout of new packaging designs.
- Experience in a fast-paced e-commerce environment, with the ability to manage multiple programs simultaneously and communicate effectively with stakeholders.
- A data-driven approach, with the ability to analyze, test, and iterate packaging solutions based on operational outcomes.
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills (e.g., pivot tables, VLOOKUP, macros) and proficiency in Microsoft Office.
- Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
- High attention to detail, exceptional organizational and problem-solving abilities, and a proactive, self-motivated mentality.
- Critical thinking and the ability to drive innovation and anticipate business needs related to packaging.
- Willingness to travel as needed.
Bonus
- Experience in e-commerce, retail, or manufacturing environments.
- Proficiency in SQL and Tableau for data analysis and visualization.
- Experience with packaging material sourcing or vendor engagement.
- Knowledge of cold chain and pharmaceutical packaging.
- Background in packaging sustainability initiatives
