Job Description

At Chewy, it is our mission to become the most trusted and convenient online destination for pet parents and our partners – vets and service providers – alike. Our success is measured by the happiness of the people and pets we serve, not simply by the amount of pet supplies we deliver. That’s why we continue to think of outside-the-Chewy-box ways to delight, surprise, and thank our loyal pet lovers!

Our Opportunity:

Chewy is seeking a customer-obsessed, highly motivated, and detail-oriented Senior Cold Chain Packaging Engineer to join our fast-paced Delivery Experience organization. This role is responsible for owning Chewy’s cold chain packaging programs and leading the overall pharmacy packaging strategy, with a strong focus on enhancing the unboxing customer experience. The position plays a key role in identifying and implementing opportunities to improve delivery quality and reduce packaging and operational costs through data-driven decision making. Successful candidates will bring a blend of packaging engineering expertise, analytical thinking, creativity, and cross-functional collaboration. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to Chewy’s mission to deliver exceptional experiences to pet parents while growing your career within one of the fastest-growing e-commerce companies. Does this sound like you? If so, we would love to hear from you! Come run with the Pack!

What You'll Need:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Packaging Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Supply Chain Management, or a related field from a leading institution.
  • Minimum 6 years of experience (or 5 years with a Master’s or MBA) in cold chain and/or pharmaceutical packaging.
  • Validated experience with cold chain packaging for human or pet consumption.
  • Strong ability to translate packaging design into measurable performance metrics (e.g., concessions, damages) and troubleshoot issues across fulfillment.
  • Familiarity with the cost and operational impact of packaging designs, from development to execution in fulfillment centers.
  • Showed strength in collaborating across cross-functional teams to ensure smooth development, testing, and launch of new packaging designs.
  • Experience in fast-paced e-commerce environments, with the ability to manage multiple programs simultaneously and communicate proactively with customers.
  • Strong data-driven attitude with the ability to analyze, test, and iterate packaging solutions based on operational performance.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills (e.g., pivot tables, VLOOKUP, macros) and proficiency in Microsoft Office.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • High attention to detail, exceptional organizational and problem-solving abilities, and a proactive, self-motivated attitude.
  • Ability to anticipate business needs, drive innovation, and think strategically about packaging improvements.
  • Willingness to travel as needed.

What You'll Do:

  • Design and maintain cold chain packaging guidelines for frozen food and temperature sensitive pharmaceutical shipments, including end-to-end testing and certification.
  • Develop and refine custom thermal profiles to simulate real-world shipping environments within the Chewy network.
  • Lead the transformation of cold chain and pharmacy packaging suites, optimizing for both customer experience and cost efficiency.
  • Collaborate with procurement, transportation, operations, merchandising, software engineering, suppliers, and the Chewy packaging lab to continuously improve packaging solutions and systems.
  • Champion initiatives to enhance customer experience through elevated packaging performance, reliability, and innovation.
  • Contribute to supply chain analytics and other projects, providing packaging domain expertise beyond core responsibilities.

 Bonus:

  • Hazard Analysis & Critical Control Points (HACCP) certification and Preventive Controls Qualified Individual (PCQI) training.
  • Working knowledge of FDA regulations, including 21 CFR Part 507.27 (Current Good Manufacturing Practice for Animal Food) and the Sanitary Transportation of Human and Animal Food rule.
  • Experience in e-commerce, retail, manufacturing, or startup environments.
  • Proficiency in SQL and Tableau for data analysis and visualization.
  • Background in packaging sustainability initiatives.
  • Experience with packaging material sourcing or vendor engagement.
