About the team:

At Klaviyo, our UX Design Team is a multidisciplinary group of Product Designers, Researchers, Content Strategists, and Design Systems specialists. We take a deeply collaborative and human-centered approach to building powerful, data-driven tools that help our customers grow their businesses.

Our design philosophy is grounded in clarity, empathy, and utility—and we’re proud of the way we transform complex data and machine learning outputs into intuitive, actionable experiences for users. You will be working globally with a team currently based across the US from the East to West Coasts. Please note that this is a hybrid role located in our Boston office that requires 3 days/week onsite. Fully remote candidates will not be considered at this time.

About the role:

The Director of Design is a catalyst for product innovation, customer value, and business growth. This role is ideal for a design leader who operates at the intersection of user experience, data, and product strategy. Balancing strategic thinking with hands-on design work, you will guide your team through every stage of the design process. In this role, you will actively participate in the design process, contributing directly to projects when needed and leading by example in both your design work and strategic thinking. You will collaborate closely with Product, Engineering, and Marketing teams to identify opportunities and deliver impactful design solutions that support key business metrics. Ensuring alignment and clarity between design and other teams will be crucial. You will also provide guidance and support to your team, helping them navigate complex and ambiguous challenges while fostering a culture of continuous learning and development.

How you’ll have an impact:

  • Build, mentor, and scale a high-performing, inclusive team of product designers and design leaders across multiple product areas.
  • Lead strategic initiatives across discovery, ideation, and delivery—ensuring we craft solutions that are both technically feasible and deeply human.
  • Act as a key design partner to Product and Engineering leadership, advocating for the user and helping to translate business strategy into elegant design execution.
  • Champion cross-functional alignment by ensuring that insights, frameworks, and best practices developed in one part of the product can scale and influence the broader experience.
  • Drive a culture of continuous improvement through design reviews, mentorship, and thoughtful feedback—ensuring high standards in usability, accessibility, and visual craft.

What you’ll need:

  • 10+ years of experience designing user-facing digital products, ideally at scale.
  • 5+ years in a design leadership role, with experience managing managers and senior ICs.
  • A track record of building and leading diverse, high-performing teams through periods of growth and change.
  • Strong design sensibilities and the ability to dive into ambiguity to bring clarity and direction.
  • Experience working on complex product ecosystems and collaborating across multiple domains (Product, Engineering, Data, etc.).
  • User-focused mindset, driven by data and research to identify and solve real member problems.
  • Proven track record of fostering a culture of experimentation, innovation, and continuous learning.
  • Excellent leadership and communication skills to align cross-functional teams.
  • Comfortable with ambiguity, risk, and change.
