Keith Cline, VentureFizz
Chris, thanks so much for joining us.
Christopher Yancey, ButcherBox
Thanks for having me.
Keith Cline, VentureFizz
I'm excited to talk to you because we're going to talk about ButcherBox. And if you think about it, the E-commerce subscription economy is growing day by day. And ButcherBox is a prime example. So let's talk about it. What is ButcherBox?
Christopher Yancey, ButcherBox
So we were founded in 2015. And we're the leading direct consumer brand that is focusing on delivering high-quality beef, poultry, pork, and seafood to consumers doors. Our goal is to transform the industry by considering the humane treatment of animals, the impact on the environment, and the welfare of the farmers and fishermen.
Keith Cline, VentureFizz
So Chris, you're the CTO at ButcherBox. So talk about your background prior to joining the company. And what led you to join.
Christopher Yancey, ButcherBox
I've been part of several startups in the past, the last startup we really went from not starting with four engineers, day one, we were over 300 people in technology and little over three years, and then IPO in 2019. So it was you know, an astronomical ride to the top of and being on Wall Street IPO, it was a fantastic ride. Before that had been a part of other startups that had different exits. And then I've really enjoyed being part of a startup. I enjoy working on building teams, evaluating the systems that we have, and thinking about how to make them successful.
Keith Cline, VentureFizz
So what's the current stage of ButcherBox in terms of, you know, number of employees, sighs whatever you can share?
Christopher Yancey, ButcherBox
for sure. So we started in 2015, as I said, in six years, so we've managed to do 540 million in revenue last year. And that's 20% year over year growth. And one of the key things is we've done that bootstrapped. So we have no outside funding, it's been an incredible journey for the team. And we right now, also with 180 employees. So it's an incredible story. It's an incredible thing to be a part of. And I'm really happy to be here and to help them to continue to grow. We have fairly aggressive hiring goals this year, as well, as we continue to hit our stride.
Keith Cline, VentureFizz
Now, I know that ButcherBox is growing across all functional areas, because you run a very complex business, but as the CTO, we'll talk about some of the positions that you're currently hiring for.
Christopher Yancey, ButcherBox
So we have positions all over the company from marketing, our product team, our product engagement team, as well as my area of engineering and data. And so one of the key roles, we're hiring right now, as a data product manager, it's a strategic role that's going to sit between engineering product, and our stakeholders, and really help to translate business needs into technical solutions, help us to prioritize our work, and really build the data products that are going to drive us forward. Another role is software engineering manager. So we have two software engineering managers, we're hiring now. It's really one of the most critical positions in our team, they ended up leading the team mentoring, the junior developers being a key solutions-focused delivery persons as well. So we always rely on them as a workhorse as a team. And it's new technology that we're working on. As you said, it's extremely complicated, but really challenging and rewarding to do that work.
Keith Cline, VentureFizz
So the day-to-day working environment, the company like what's it like working there?
Christopher Yancey, ButcherBox
Yeah, so we have a hybrid culture. You know, if you think about I started during the pandemic, so it was a different experience interviewing and onboarding during a pandemic. I think that we adapt our processes to be successful in situations like that. But your bucks isn't a great job with that. And we have a really big commitment to be in hybrid, you have to ask more questions. You have to rely on written communications, you can't depend on Hallway Conversations, to get the job done anymore. You have to really be intentional about communications and have processes that really support that. We're committed to the hybrid culture, and we've committed to a work-life balance as well. And you really means that and we take it, we take it from the CEO down, everyone's committed to culture, and to really focusing on the important things, both on the job and at home.
Keith Cline, VentureFizz
So the job markets are very active out there. There are lots of opportunities for people to explore, which is a good thing. It's good that people have options. But why is now the ideal time to join ButcherBox?
Christopher Yancey, ButcherBox
Yeah, it's a great time to be part of this company. When you look at our success record. When you look at what we need to have done, we're still growing the team. We're being a very aggressively growing company. We have a lot of greenfield development. We're building out several new solutions that are going to be the foundation of our business for years to come. So that makes the problems really challenging. It makes them rewarding. It's a great place to come be part of a terrific culture. These types of work for engineers and marketing people and these types of problems are stuff that careers are built on their great resume-building experiences. And it's just fun to beat v here as well.
Keith Cline, VentureFizz
