TripAdvisor, the world’s largest travel site, operates at scale with over 500 million reviews, opinions, photos, and videos reaching over 390 million unique visitors each month. We are a data driven company, and we have lots and lots of data! The Data Warehouse team is responsible for building and managing the infrastructure and tools that enables the rest of the company to interact with the petabytes of data in our data lake.

Our mission statement is to create a new world class analytics infrastructure for TripAdvisor. We just finished a massive project to create a new ETL platform based on Kafka and Samza providing a less than 7-minute latency between activity on the site to our data warehouse. Internal adoption of this platform has drastically changed how front-end teams track and analyze site activity and our current forecasts is for this to handle tens of terabytes of data a day in the near future.

Our next epoch will focus on building better tools and infrastructure for analyzing and making use of this data. This is largely a green-field effort and we are looking for individuals who can help us design and build this new analytics infrastructure largely from the ground up.

This is a hands-on job for a “big data” engineer.  The job requires both serious technical chops and effective communication skills.  You will provide technical leadership in an environment that moves fast, collaborates between teams and team members, and that expects you to own your projects.

The Data Warehouse team works closely with our Analytics team to manage all stages of the data pipeline. We make use of technologies like Spark, Hive, Presto, and Amazon Redshift in our ETL pipelines which expose the data to our analyst and machine learning applications.  Some members of our team even do a bit of UI work for the series of internal tools we have built and maintained; these include tools that automatically detect data anomalies, enable analysts and engineers to easily build/manage their own ETLs, or even managing the many A/B tests that TripAdvisor runs on a regular basis. Lastly, we use some of the latest machine learning libraries in our tools and analysis, including TensorFlow.

In addition to building the software that is the backbone of how TripAdvisor processes data, the warehouse team has operational responsibilities for ensuring our infrastructure is meeting the agreed upon SLAs.

As a Senior Analyst, Measurement & Attribution in the traffic acquisition team, you will leverage data to deliver analysis, insight and automation that will contribute to driving revenue growth for TripAdvisor’s online marketing program. The Online Marketing team is part of the larger traffic acquisition group and is responsible for a variety of online paid advertising channels. The data analyst helps the team understand the channel’s performance in greater detail, the site behavior of the users who engage with our ads, the cross-device behavior of the users and anticipate the needs of the business and find opportunities to grow revenue.

This is a “big data” job – sifting through lots of data to identify the growth opportunities, diagnose issues, be it on our site or on our marketing channels, all in support of an effective online marketing program. It is also a programming job – when needed, building the infrastructure needed to analyze and automate the data and reporting. What We Seek:

  • 5+ years of experience selling online advertising with responsibility for an annual quota of at least $2.5 million
  • 6+ years of media sales experience
  • Recent and successful track record of sales (to the travel industry is a plus but not a necessity)
  • Enthusiasm for the industry and the ability to plan and build long-term relationships across a dedicated sector within the Americas
  • A natural ability to help clients grow their brand and achieve internal targets through developing creative, multi-level partnerships

Our team is responsible for building the company’s next generation of infrastructure for a number of pieces related to purchasing on TripAdvisor.  This includes our booking platform, credit card vault, finance systems and other key services.  These are high volume systems that support booking on TripAdvisor; think how you book, make reservations and send data to partners.

  • The booking platform supports both our Instant Book Hotels as well as the Attractions booking platform, interfaces and monitoring systems.
  • We build the Credit Card store, related encryption and security features and bank payment infrastructure.
  • The sales platform infrastructure are owned by our team including core CPC, CPM our Inside sales and the Partnerships groups.

What you will do

  • Write code…it's an engineering role, after all.
  • Work with you team, as well as other groups like product management, design, plus others, to bring your projects to fruition.
  • Touch whatever level of code required in order to complete your project.
  • Build out our SOA and Microservice architecture
  • Be creative and pragmatic when solving the problem you are working on.
