Our Hotel’s team is focused on building the world’s best hotel experience for our travelers. This combines both our consumer facing side for travelers to come to research, plan, and book the perfect hotel. As well as building a platform for our suppliers: hoteliers, and OTAs to advertise and display their prices with corresponding availability.

Engineers work on game changing features that are seen by millions of people a day.  Such as:

  • Rebuilding the site to drive our mobile first initiative by providing recommendations and custom filters to provide a better user experience.
  • You will build products (both free and paid) for Hotel owners, including hotel listings, hotel sponsorships, and in depth analytics of hotel’s performance on our site.

TripAdvisor, the world’s largest travel site, operates at scale with over 500 million reviews, opinions, photos, and videos reaching over 390 million unique visitors each month. We are a data driven company, and we have lots and lots of data! The Data Warehouse team is responsible for building and managing the infrastructure and tools that enables the rest of the company to interact with the petabytes of data in our data lake.

Our mission statement is to create a new world class analytics infrastructure for TripAdvisor. We just finished a massive project to create a new ETL platform based on Kafka and Samza providing a less than 7-minute latency between activity on the site to our data warehouse. Internal adoption of this platform has drastically changed how front-end teams track and analyze site activity and our current forecasts is for this to handle tens of terabytes of data a day in the near future.

Our next epoch will focus on building better tools and infrastructure for analyzing and making use of this data. This is largely a green-field effort and we are looking for individuals who can help us design and build this new analytics infrastructure largely from the ground up.

This is a hands-on job for a “big data” engineer.  The job requires both serious technical chops and effective communication skills.  You will provide technical leadership in an environment that moves fast, collaborates between teams and team members, and that expects you to own your projects.

The Data Warehouse team works closely with our Analytics team to manage all stages of the data pipeline. We make use of technologies like Spark, Hive, Presto, and Amazon Redshift in our ETL pipelines which expose the data to our analyst and machine learning applications.  Some members of our team even do a bit of UI work for the series of internal tools we have built and maintained; these include tools that automatically detect data anomalies, enable analysts and engineers to easily build/manage their own ETLs, or even managing the many A/B tests that TripAdvisor runs on a regular basis. Lastly, we use some of the latest machine learning libraries in our tools and analysis, including TensorFlow.

In addition to building the software that is the backbone of how TripAdvisor processes data, the warehouse team has operational responsibilities for ensuring our infrastructure is meeting the agreed upon SLAs.

We are looking for someone with a strong sense of responsibility: taking pride in your work, leveraging others, owning the problem. And you love, and we mean love, data.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Computer Science, Engineering or equivalent
  • 5+ years of large scale, full life cycle development experience
  • In-depth technical experience with big data technologies such as Hadoop (HDFS, Hive, Map/Reduce), Spark, Kafka/Samza
  • General software engineering and programming experience; most of our larger projects are in Java, but we also have lots of scripts in Python, Bash, even some Perl.
  • ETL and SQL expertise
  • Linux experience
  • Ops / DevOps experience is a plus

As a Senior Analyst, Measurement & Attribution in the traffic acquisition team, you will leverage data to deliver analysis, insight and automation that will contribute to driving revenue growth for TripAdvisor’s online marketing program. You will work closely with marketing channel owners, measurement and experimentation, and bidding and targeting teams, as well as other stakeholders across the business. TripAdvisor provides a unique work environment that captures the speed, innovation and excitement of a start-up, at a thriving, growing and well-established industry brand.

The Online Marketing team is part of the larger traffic acquisition group and is responsible for a variety of online paid advertising channels. To do our job well, we need to know a lot about the traveler and we need to know a lot about our marketing channel’s capabilities and limits. The data analyst helps the team understand the channel’s performance in greater detail, the site behavior of the users who engage with our ads, the cross-device behavior of the users and anticipate the needs of the business and find opportunities to grow revenue.

This is a “big data” job – sifting through lots of data to identify the growth opportunities, diagnose issues, be it on our site or on our marketing channels, all in support of an effective online marketing program. It is also a programming job – when needed, building the infrastructure needed to analyze and automate the data and reporting. This is a hands-on job for someone who wants to solve important business problems that depend on “big data” analysis.  The job requires both serious technical chops and effective communication skills.  Sometimes you will build the solution yourself, and sometimes you will be coordinating the efforts of others, but at all times you will be expected to think creatively about solving the business problem.

What you'll bring to the team:

  • 3+ years of experience as a Data Analyst
  • Solid RDBMS operational knowledge with outstanding SQL skills
  • Hands on experience working with very large data sets, including statistical analyses, data visualization, data mining, and data cleansing/transformation.
  • Ability to transform raw, noisy log level data into useful business fact tables
  • Solid database design skills
  • ETL expertise
  • Proficient in Tableau (or other similar data visualization tools) to analyze data and publish self-service dashboards
  • Fluent in additional data manipulation languages (Hive / Hadoop cluster querying, etc)
  • Computer Science expertise – algorithms, data structures, preferably 2+ years programming experience (Python or R)
  • A natural affinity for math, especially for statistics
  • Ability to understand and communicate business needs
  • Ability to come up to speed quickly in order to understand and coordinate the work of domain experts.
  • Strong sense of responsibility: taking pride in your work, leveraging others, owning the problem
  • The ability to combine creative use of insight and data with attention to detail, while balancing these details with the larger business objectives.
  • You must be comfortable with and adaptable to changing priorities. We work in an innovative fast growth environment where products and processes evolve rapidly.
  • A self-starter who demonstrates initiative, resourcefulness, and tenacity while working independently. Must be comfortable in a goal-driven and results-oriented environment requiring little supervision and the willingness to be accountable for analysis and resulting recommendations.
  • Ability to work effectively in a highly demanding environment with multiple competing priorities both independently and as part of a team. You will be confident partnering with other departments, and team leaders within the business to achieve your objectives.
  • And you love, and we mean love, data
