Unearth Women: The First Women's Travel Magazine
Unearth Women is a travel media company made up of a quarterly print publication, a digital site, branded trips, and more. The company was founded last year, following a successful Kickstarter campaign that started in March and more-than-doubled its goal. I got the chance to speak with Elise Fitzsimmons, a co-founder as well as publisher, about the company's story.
Tell me the story of how Unearth Women was started.
Unearth Women was created by our co-founder Nikki Vargas. On a panel, at a travel conference, she was struck by various women's tales of sexism in the travel industry. An estimated 67 million women travel annually, while women make up 70 percent of the travel consumer base and 85 percent of travel purchasing decisions; yet the travel media industry remains largely male-dominated. Unearth Women was created to address the oft-overlooked female travel market by creating travel content curated with female travelers in mind across media platforms.
For those who don't know, what is Unearth Women? How does it work?
Unearth Women is a women's travel media company made up of a quarterly print publication, a digital site, and a forthcoming podcast, branded trips, and mobile application. Women hold the most purchasing power in the travel space, yet travel media is tailored primarily to men. Unearth Women curates travel content written by women, for women. All too often, travel media tends to offer generic advice that is neither tailored to its readers or gendered. We believe that female travelers have specific needs/concerns/obstacles when it comes to travel and, as such, should have content that speaks to traveling as a woman. While there are plenty of nice female travel bloggers, there is not a women’s travel media brand that offers a voice of authority on travel. How has the company evolved over time?
Since our Spring 2018 launch, Unearth Women has grown its digital website to over 80K views, has sold 1,000 copies of the initial pilot issue, secured international distribution for Issue 2 with a circulation of 15K, has grown from 3 to 14 team members, and has been featured in international media outlets such as the NYTimes, Forbes, Travel + Leisure, Vogue Spain, Cheddar TV, and Good Morning America.
Where does the company go next?
In 2019 Unearth Women will continue to grow circulation of the print and digital magazine, as well as produce podcast that that takes an in-depth look at feminism across cultures, create a mobile app that allows solo female travelers to connect, develop original video content, and take female travelers on Uneath Women trips.
How big is the team? Any positions you're looking to hire for in the coming months?
Unearth Women currently has 14 members on the team and are expanding our sales department.
