Working In Boston Tech: Toast

There are a lot of amazing technology companies in and around Boston. Many of them are hiring like crazy!

On our BIZZpages alone there are about 150 Boston area tech companies actively recruiting the best talent around. These companies are awesome and we want to help them show off what it's like to be a part of the team and the process a potential employee goes through to get there.

Today, we hear from the team at Toast, headquartered in downtown Boston! Toast is an all-in-one restaurant management platform. As a cloud-based system built specifically for restaurants, Toast offers advanced functionality including tableside ordering, quick menu modifications, real-time enterprise reporting, online ordering, and labor management on an easy-to-use interface.

What is it like to work at your company in terms of your culture?

At Toast, we’re a group of passionate, hard-working people who want to make a difference for our customers while also playing corn hole, sipping whiskey, and eating tasty food from all of our awesome customer restaurants. We might pull an all-nighter to pull off a visionary hackathon project or stay late to eat cake and watch a movie. You might walk in one day to see our founders playing ping pong or spraying champagne all over the place after an especially big win. We’re trying to do something big – have a big impact on a huge industry – and have fun at the same time.

What’s the best way to get a job at Toast?

A great place to start is our Careers Page – we’re growing fast so we have a ton of open positions!

We’re pretty laid back so don’t be afraid to show some personality during your interview. Also, we want to see you can fit with our culture so if you aren’t a three piece suit wearing guy, don’t turn into one just for us (but also probably don’t wear shorts).

Toast is really about the mission – making the lives of restaurateurs easier through efficiency and technology – truly believing that helping people can make a difference will make you stand out from the herd.

And it certainly helps to know a Toaster.

What can someone expect during the interview process?

One of our lovely recruiters will be in touch to schedule a phone interview initially. Our recruiters specialize in their fields of hiring and know their stuff. Next, you’ll likely meet with your potential immediate manager and colleagues – some in your department and some in cooperating departments. Finally, you’ll meet with our CEO and at least one of our co-founders. It’s a fairly rigorous process because we are dedicated to finding true Toasters who will really fit with the team.

What can people expect over the course of their career at Toast?

Like any startup, there is a ton of opportunity to grow fast and take on new challenges or roles. It’s easy to department jump if you want to try something new or just take on a lot of responsibility in a timeframe that wouldn’t be possible at a larger company.

We have some pretty ambitious goals to become a big player in the restaurant technology space – to give you an idea, 20% of the US market would be a $10 billion opportunity. Not to mention huge opportunities like the international market, additional related verticals, or additional tools to affect the restaurant goer experience.

So to summarize, there is a huge opportunity to become a significant part of a company that is growing and will continue to grow super fast and really wants to invent and create technology that will affect a ton of people.

Are there any favorite activities that the employees do outside of the office?

We have big quarterly parties typically at one of our customer’s restaurants or in our really fun office. We have some ongoing outings including wine dinners, go-carting, and cocktail hours to celebrate hitting goals and milestones.

Within the office, we’ll have ice cream parties, movie nights, and our Friday drop everything and do pushups (Pushup Friday) which is immediately followed by Whiskey Friday.

Whether it’s in the office or outside, we’re typically doing something fun together while enjoying some tasty food and drink.

Are there any fun facts or unique stories that you can share about Toast or individuals that work there?

Toast actually started as a mobile payments app, but after the three co-founders developed the app and starting pitching it to restaurants, they found that the solution people really needed was a technologically relevant point-of-sale. Within three months they essentially scrapped their initial product and created a fully functional cloud-based point-of-sale that can compete against six different restaurant technology markets. This is a big deal because restaurant owners currently have to buy a la carte solutions from all of these spaces that don’t integrate.

Three years and 1,050 customers later, we can see that we’re on to something.

What TV or movie would best describe the working environment and employees at Toast?

Captain Planet. The team is composed of people with all sorts of backgrounds who come together for the common good. When we aren’t saving the world, we’re all hanging out and having fun, but when a situation arises, we turn superhero and dedicate our time and knowledge to creating a solution.

Do you have any unique benefits or perks?

The major perk is unlimited vacation and we’re pretty flexible about working from home. In addition to that, we have 401k, reimbursement for professional groups, full healthcare and dental. Not to mention all the snacks you can eat.

What’s on tap or in your fridge?

We’re getting a new (bigger!) kegerator soon, and in the meantime we’re sticking to bottles and cans. We’ve stocked the kegs with nice craft beer selections (most recently Allagash White and Jack’s Abby Hoponius Union) and more recently, we’ve kept it simple with UFO white ales, hard cider, and Corona’s. Needless to say, we can’t wait for the new kegerator.
