Working In Boston Tech: SilverRail Technologies

Today, in our Working In Boston Tech series, we hear from the team at SilverRail Technologies, based in Woburn, MA! Their mission is simple: to make global rail content more accessible, affordable and available. To achieve this, they’ve created the world’s first unified platform for global rail – SilverCore. And it’s already helping leading rail carriers in North America and Europe connect with the global ecosystem of travel distributors and managers. By unifying the world’s carriers around one platform, they’ve made global rail data consistent, and global rail travel easier to distribute. It’s how they’re fuelling the efficient, scalable and reliable customer experience modern rail needs.

What is it like to work at SilverRail Technologies in terms of your culture?

Inclusive, collaborative, active, challenging, and fun! We have a very close-knit team with a dare to think big mentality. Quality is very important and our people are held to high standards. Our developers get together on a bi-weekly basis to discuss new technologies, seminars they’ve attended, or just brainstorm ideas on what we could be doing. We have a rec room with lots of toys: board games, video games, and ping-pong. Lunch is often accompanied by a soccer game on the big screen, trash-talking from the fantasy football league, or a lively discussion about what’s going on in the world.

What’s the best way to get a job at SilverRail Technologies?

We are looking for people who are inquisitive about the industry, our product, the future of rail, multimodal transport, and how we can transform it. People who ask “why?” and challenge the status quo are the kind of forward-thinking individuals we want on our team. Feel free to get in touch through the website, or at [email protected].

What can someone expect during the interview process?

We want to find people who will help SilverRail change our corner of the world for the better. But equally, we want people to find the right place for them to learn and grow. We’ll do a technical phone interview to get a better sense of your skills. Then, you’ll come in to meet with our engineers, do some white board problems, and have a conversation with us about your experience. You’ll ask us questions about how we work and what we can do for you and your career.

What can people expect over the course of their career at SilverRail Technologies?

You won’t stop learning. Once you’ve mastered something, you’ll be given a new challenge to take on.

Are there any favorite activities that the employees do outside of the office?

One of our core values is “We enjoy life” and this is reflected in a rich set of activities throughout the year. For 2016, we’re already planning on seasonal outings, chair massages, cook-offs, Dave & Busters afternoons, volunteer days, sponsoring a team for a road race, and more!

Are there any fun facts or unique stories that you can share about SilverRail Technologies or individuals that work there?

  • During our 6+ years, we have had 81 releases, all of which have been on schedule. This is a testament to our balance of being fearless leaders while maintaining integrity in delivery.
  • Our CEO (aka Chief Conductor), Aaron Gowell, completed one of the lowest-recorded combat parachute jumps in military history – from 300 feet, at night, into Panama.
  • With offices in 3 continents and 4 countries, we have a very diverse team. Our management team is a pretty good example, covering 6 countries with 7 people: USA, Canada, Ireland, Pakistan, England, and Australia.

What TV or movie would best describe the working environment and employees at SilverRail Technologies?

SilverRail is Planes, Trains and Automobiles meets The Avengers. The bumbling slapstick customer experience of Planes, Trains and Automobiles is what we’re trying to eliminate. We are building a team of engineering superheroes to turbocharge the rail industry with technology.

Do you have any unique benefits or perks?

We have a great working environment here, including:

- Stand-up desks and (soon) a shared walking desk

- Loaded MacBook Pro with a 27” monitor

- Fully-stocked kitchen

- Comfy breakout lounge and games room

- An environment to get stuff done

- Company-paid healthcare deductibles

- Everyone gets a free Fitbit

But that’s not all. We’re keen to let you fit your life and your work together in the way that suits you, so in addition to offering flexible work schedules, the office is fitted with showers and washrooms for those who want to exercise before, during or after work.

What’s on tap or in your fridge?

Our kitchen is stocked with pretty much whatever fuel our employees want: energy bars, chips, cereal, fruit, and drinks of all sorts. On the caffeine front, we have an Illy espresso machine as well as a coffee maker. And, of course, we have craft beer in the fridge.
