Working In Boston Tech: Censio
Today in our Working In Boston Tech series, we hear from the team at Boston's Censio! Censio is helping to drive the future of connected devices and autonomous cars with its leading mobile platform for vehicle telematics and driving safety. Censio is backed by General Catalyst, Bain and Lakestar and founded by the CEO of Zipcar and the President of Tesla.
What's it like to work at your company in terms of your culture?
At Censio, we work as a team to make driving safer and more affordable. We win and lose as a team, we look for people who are honest, humble, effective, adaptable, passionate and committed to being great and always giving their best.
Our team comes to work each day knowing that they are part of something bigger than themselves, that when we deliver on our goals we will be making a positive impact on the world around us. This drives each of us to work hard and support each other.
What’s the best way to get a job at Censio?
Research us. Understand what we do and why we are doing it. Let us know why you are interested in us and what you could bring to the table. Above all have a passion for data and solving real world problems. Show us your enthusiasm in the interview process.
You can see all of the different jobs we have listed on our Careers page at Cens.io Please apply to any of our open positions if you see yourself fitting into any of the open roles!
What can someone expect during the interview process?
Currently you will interview in the co-working space within the Harvard Launch Lab. Interviews for every role start with a phone screen from either our Talent Manager Jen or the direct hiring manager. This helps us to get a sense of who you are and gives you a sense of how you would fit within the team.
After the phone screen, we invite you for an in-person interview where you’ll have a chance to meet a few members of the team. After the face-to-face interview we have you back in for a full-day project. You’ll participate in our daily stand-up/stretch and then work on the project for a few hours. You break for lunch with the team, and later that afternoon you will present your project to them. After that we decide whether you’re the right fit for us (and whether we are the right fit for you).
What can people expect over the course of their career at Censio?
We seek to put employees in positions where they can grow, and give them great latitude to advance based on performance and merit. We are constantly evolving our business to fit the needs of insurers and consumers, iterating our product and pushing each other to do better. We believe that we can best achieve our goals through fostering ideas across the organization, so while we have a traditional management structure, we actively seek and act on ideas from every team member.
It is a great time to get involved with Censio - we are well funded, our technology has already been selected by a blue-chip customer and we have an incredible team that has built technology that will revolutionize an industry and make the world safer.
Are there any favorite activities that the employees do outside of the office?
We are a very active company! Every morning right after stand-up all of the team participates in a team stretch; the stretch consists of various yoga poses, some more challenging than others. Each Thursday we go for a team run and we occasionally visit Brookline Boulder for a climbing session or two. We also try and get out in the community in any way we can -- next month we are going to the local food bank.
Are there any fun facts or unique stories that you can share about Censio or individuals that work there?
Each member of our growing team brings something new and unique to the group;
Censio has a huge appetite! Most Fridays after our morning planning meeting we will walk over to a restaurant in Harvard Square and sit down for a casual meal.
We know our scotch! Every Friday afternoon we have what is called “scotch o’clock” where we have a variety of scotches to sample and share fun facts about that scotch.
David Morse, our VP of Sales, is a standup Comedian. He is hilarious and will keep you in stitches!
Matt, our VP of Engineering and Rafi, our VP of Product sometimes wear matching outfits. It isn’t on purpose -- at least, they claim that it isn’t on purpose -- but they have an eerily similar wardrobe.
When we were just starting out Joe and Eddie would take trips in the Harvard iLab parking lot to test our Driver Ident technology: they would pull out, drive in a circle, park walk 15 steps than repeat, they did this about 300 times.
- Brad used to wear auburn dress shoes, knee-high socks, green shorts and a blue blazer work on a regular basis - needless to say we still pick on him for it. ;)
What TV or movie would best describe the working environment and employees at Censio?
The best one that comes to mind is Scorpion -- they are a bunch of wizkids saving the world one adventure at a time.
