VentureFizz's Year in Review - Top Investments of 2017

2017 was another big year for Boston tech and with the year coming to close, it's time to look back at some of the big moments that happened over the course of this year from our Deals section.

Here are the top investments that raised a minimum of $30M or more.  We broke the list into two categories: 1)  Mega Rounds - $100M or greater.  2) Growth Rounds - $30M up to $100M.


Mega Rounds ($100M or Greater)

January 6 - PatientsLikeMe raised an investment that was a little over $100 million.
 

ClearMotion
February 1 
- ClearMotion, Inc., an automotive technology company developing the world's first digital chassis, announced a $100 million Series C round of funding led by clients advised by J.P. Morgan Asset Management, with participation from New Enterprise Associates (NEA), Qualcomm Ventures, World Innovation Lab (WiL), and Eileses Capital.
 


March 9 - 
DraftKings raised $100M for a Series E1 round of funding with the round being led by Los Angeles Dodgers part owner Todd Boehly's Eldrige Industries, LLC.
 


May 4 - Fuze, the leading cloud-based communications solution provider for the modern global enterprise, announced it closed $30 million in additional capital, bringing the company’s recent financing round to $134 million.


June 21 - 
Cybersecurity startup Cybereason raised a $100 million investment led by SoftBank Corp.
 


July 17 - 
End-to-end metal 3D printing metal system developers Desktop Metal raised $115 million in a Series D funding in the largest individual private round for a metal additive manufacturing company. The round was led New Enterprise Associates, GV, GE Ventures, Future Fund, and Techtronic Industries.
 


July 19 -  In one of the largest investments of the year, Clayton, Dubilier & Rice, and Hillhouse Capital Group led a $223 million investment in Vets First Choice, the leading provider of technology-enabled healthcare services for veterinary medicine.


July 25 - 
Toast, the all-in-one restaurant technology platform and one of the fastest-growing technology companies in the U.S., announced a $101 million round of funding in financing led by new investors Generation Investment Management and Lead Edge Capital.
 


December 6 - Indigo Ag, Inc., a company dedicated to harnessing nature to help farmers sustainably feed the planet, closed its Series D funding round with an additional $47 million closing the round at $203 million.


Growth Rounds ($30M up to $100M)


January 6 - Arcadia Healthcare Solutions announced that Merck Global Health Innovation Fund, GE Ventures, and existing investors Peloton Equity, Zaffre Investments, and Morgan Stanley Alternative Investment Partners invested $30 million of growth capital.
 


January 10 - 
Kaminario, a leading all-flash storage company, announced it raised $75 million in a new round of financing, led by private equity firm Waterwood.
 


January 11 - ezCater, the only nationwide marketplace for business catering, announced that it has raised a $35 million round of funding led by ICONIQ Capital with participation from existing investor Insight Venture Partners.
 


January 18 - 
Salsify, the product content management platform for distributed commerce, announced $30 million in Series C funding led by Underscore.VC.
 


January 23 - General Atlantic led a $50 million investment in Turbonomic. General Atlantic joined existing investors Bain Capital Ventures, Highland Capital, Globespan, and Iconiq. 
 


March 1 - 
Kensho raised $50M in funding led by S&P Global with participation from Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America Merrill Lynch, Morgan Stanley, Citigroup and Wells Fargo, General Catalyst, and Breyer Capital.
 


March 23 - 
DataRobot, a leader in automated machine learning, raised $54 million in funding for its Series C financing. 
 


March 24 - 
Placester raised a $50M Series D round led by existing investor New Enterprise Associates (NEA).
 


May 16 - 
LevelUp announced that it completed a $50 million round to continue to grow its business. Investors who participated in this round include JPMorgan Chase, US Boston and CentroCredit Bank.
 


June 27 - 
Catalant Technologies, the technology platform for business expertise, announced that it secured $41M for its Series D round of funding and an expansion of its existing debt facility, co-led by Highland Capital Partners and General Catalyst.
 


June 27 - 
CloudHealth Technologies, the cloud service management company, raised a $46 million Series D round of financing with Kleiner Perkins, Meritech Capital Partners, and CloudHealth Technologies’ existing investors.
 


July 18 - NewStore, Inc. secured $50 million in Series B funding. Activant Capital, who led the round, joined returning investors General Catalyst and company founder Stephan Schambach. 


September 6 - 
Aras, tan enterprise Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) software company, announced a $40 million investment round led by Silver Lake Kraftwerk with participation from GE Ventures, the investment arm of General Electric.
 


September 12 - 
Nasuni, a provider of cloud-scale enterprise file services, announced it closed $38 million in growth equity funding led by Goldman Sachs Growth Equity.
 

Infinidat
October 3 - 
INFINIDAT, an independent provider of petabyte-scale data storage solutions, closed a $95 million Series C financing round.


October 23 - 
Devoted Health, a new healthcare company created by former Athenahealth leaders, raised nearly $62 million from investors, according to a document filed with the SEC.
 


November 1 - 
Markforged, the industrial 3D printing platform unlocking a 10x acceleration in product creation speed, completed a $30 million Series C round of funding. next47, the Siemens-backed venture firm, led the round, with Microsoft Ventures, and Porsche Automobil Holding SE (Porsche SE) also making significant investments.
