VentureFizz's Year in Review - Top Exits and Acquisitions of 2017

2017 was a big year for Boston tech, and with the year coming to close, it's time to reflect at some of the big moments within the Boston tech scene.

Here's a look at some of the top exits and acquisitions of 2017.


October 12 - CarGurus, one of the leading eCommerce sites for auto shopping, went public with shares priced at $16.  The stock shot up 72% on its first day of trading.

Casa Systems

December 14 - Telecommunications software provider Casa Systems announced their IPO came at the price of $13 a share out of 6 million shares.  It was the second IPO for the Boston tech scene this year.

January 18 - Hewlett Packard Enterprise announced acquired SimpliVity, a leading provider of software-defined, hyper-converged infrastructure, for $650 million in cash.

March 6 
- Veracode, a market leader in securing several types of applications across a software development cycle, was acquired by CA Technologies for approximately $614 million.

May 25 
- Hexadite is a cybersecurity firm whose technology automates responses to cyber attacks. Microsoft agreed to acquire the company for $100 million.

Best Doctors
June 19 - 
In one of the top digital health deals of the year, Teladoc acquired second opinion service Best Doctors in a $440 million deal, including $375 million cash and $65 million in equity.

June 28 - 
Intrepid was acquired by Accenture for an undisclosed amount.

June 29 - 
Progress acquired Kinvey, a Backend-as-a-Service (BaaS) technology provider, for an undisclosed amount.

July 6 - Terrafugia, a company that has been working on flying cars since 2006, was acquired by Zhejiang Geely Holding Group, an automotive manufacturer based in Hangzhou, China.

July 17 - 
Rubicon Project, the global exchange for advertising, acquired nToggle, a technology company that makes it easier and more cost effective for programmatic buyers to find inventory.

August 23 - 
Applause, the global leader in digital experience quality, was acquired by Vista Equity Partners, a private equity firm.

August 30 - 
Global financial technology company, Blackhawk Network, Inc., acquired CashStar, a leading provider of gift card commerce solutions for $175 million.

September 28 - Dassault Systemes acquired Exa Corporation for $400 million, adding Exa's solutions to Dassault's 3DEXPERIENCE platform.

October 3 - Ace Hardware Corporation acquired a majority stake in The Grommet.

October 24
- nuTonomy was acquired by Delphi Automotive PLC for $400 million, with another $50 million in potential earn-outs.

October 26 - 
Vista Equity Partners acquired Datto, the leading provider of total data protection solutions for businesses around the world.

November 3 - 
Synopsys acquired Burlington-based cybersecurity company Black Duck Software for $565 millon.

November 8 - Barracuda Networks acquired Sonian, a leading provider of public cloud archiving and business insights.

December 18 - Cayan, a payments technology company, was acquired by TSYS for $1.05 billion.
