As Senior Vice President of Product Development, what do you like most about your role?
As the leader of our Product Development team, I’m fortunate to have the opportunity to work closely with some really smart and amazing people. We have assembled a creative and innovative team, which has enabled us to work on industry-leading and groundbreaking technologies. My favorite part of my role is unleashing the talent that we have assembled, making sure the ideas being generated at all levels are reflected in the products that we are delivering. I love pointing to one of our cameras being used in an airport and knowing that we did an outstanding job developing the technologies that allow our customers to use that camera to its fullest potential, and knowing that the video that is being captured in an efficient way to solve real-world problems.
As you expand the team in Dallas, what are you most excited about?
The fact that we are continuing to grow our development team is very exciting for all of us here at Avigilon. With the broad market acceptance of our product portfolio, we need to expand rapidly. When presented with the opportunity to create a new development center, we looked at areas that have a broad talent pool with cloud technologies. Dallas has the talent that we are looking for. I am most excited to be spinning up a brand new team and adding a dynamic group of individuals to our creative and innovative teams in Vancouver and Boston.
How would you describe the culture of the Development team?
Interestingly, the Product Development team has core team members that have roots in Avigilon, when it was a startup (started in 2004) and VideoIQ (started in 2007). The cultures of the two organizations were very similar before they joined: excited about the technologies that they get to work on and with a positive ‘can-do’ attitude, providing great solutions that solve our customer problems. Our goal has been to continue to promote this startup-like culture, gearing our processes towards allowing progress without being burdensome.
What has been your biggest “ah-ha!” moment (or proudest moment) during your time at Avigilon?
I continue to be amazed at the kinds of products and solutions we are bringing to our customers. This pride and amazement happened to me from day one. I became a part of Avigilon via the acquisition of VideoIQ in 2014. Avigilon made great video surveillance solutions and VideoIQ made great self-learning video analytics. The fact that our development teams were able to get together and deliver a joint end-to-end surveillance solution within nine months of merging was fantastic. I see the same kind of energy in developing some exciting solutions with the team at Motorola Solutions, our new parent company.
As a leader, what are you most looking forward to over the next year?
We have a great roadmap planned for 2019 — we will continue to evolve new technologies by applying machine learning and artificial intelligence to the video surveillance market, both with on-premise and cloud solutions. The new features and new cameras that we are developing are amazing. I look forward to working with this team as we deliver these solutions. I also look forward to growing our team and adding creative innovative talent in all areas of our department — artificial intelligence, cloud, application software and hardware.
