JazzHR - The Scaleable Recruitment Platform for SMBs
JazzHR is one of the major players in today's modern era of applicant tracking systems and recruitment software providers. The company is headquartered in Pittsburgh but opened up a sister office in Waltham upon hiring Pete Lamson as its CEO.
We connected with Corey Berkey, JazzHR's Director of HR, to learn more about the company, its history & culture, the details on its platform, the story behind the company's name, and more.

To start off, I’d like to learn more about your background. What were you doing leading up to your time at JazzHR?
Prior to joining the team at JazzHR, I was working with a small boutique benefits firm that was building out HR services in-house. I was the Director of HR Operations and was working on a consultative basis with the team at JazzHR (then The Resumator).
Tell me the story of JazzHR. What was the a-ha moment?
Our founder, Don Charlton, was working at a graphic design firm where he had to handle much of the hiring process. As his inbox flooded with resumes and inquiries, he thought to himself there must be an easier way to do all of this. He went home and wrote the first version of the code at his kitchen table.
Where did the name come from?
We’re called JazzHR because we feel it’s a powerful metaphor for the challenges that employees face performing in today’s modern work environment. It also represents the fact that our software breaks the rules of our industry. Jazz music doesn’t fit into a box. Jazz fans don’t fit in a box. Our company JazzHR certainly doesn’t fit in a box. The hiring process has to be flexible in today’s world - JazzHR allows our customers to manage to hire and recruiting the way they like with our powerful tools to help them gain efficiency.
What are some of the core problems JazzHR is solving through its SaaS offering?
At JazzHR, we’re on a mission to reveal the elusive yet absolutely critical connection between recruiting and performance. We’re doing this by creating innovative tools that help companies uncover the hidden recipes for making transformative hires.
We believe that hiring managers have the most important job during the whole recruiting process (choosing whom to hire), yet they’re the most underserved user of recruiting software. There’s nothing in recruiting software that helps hiring managers make better hires. We’re dedicated to closing the loop that connects recruiting to performance, so how a company recruits actually transform how it performs.
How has the company and solutions evolved over the years?
The company has gone through a transformation period and continues to have headquarters in Pittsburgh, and a sister office just outside of Boston in Waltham, MA. We have always been a customer-first company, taking customer feedback as a top priority in order to continuously evolve our product. In just the past few months, we’ve released a number of customer-facing upgrades to improve our feature set - with more to come!
Who are your customers? Any examples you can offer?
JazzHR caters to the SMB market, focusing on companies that have 25-500 employees. Some of our customers include Brilliant Earth, Threat Stack, Evertrue, and Clearly, to name a few.
Can you tell us the similarities and differences of your Boston and Pittsburgh Office, what teams are based in each, etc?
Waltham is home to our growing Sales and Marketing teams along with some members of the executive team. Pittsburgh is home base for Customer Success, Engineering, Product Management, and our Administrative teams - along with the rest of the leadership team. We moved into both of these offices just about a year ago. When we went through the process of designing these spaces we tried have similarities between both offices. You’ll see matching customer quotes and partner logos on our walls to remind us all about why we’re here today.
What are some of the cool things you’re working on right now at the company?
Calendar Sync and Candidate Texting have been top customer requests and are the next two exciting initiatives on our roadmap. I’m personally really excited for both of these features to come out. These features are going to drastically improve the scheduling and communication experience for our customers and their candidates!
Any (non-specific) growth numbers you can share?
We currently have more than 4,500 SMB’s on the JazzHR platform and enjoy a growth rate close to 40% YoY.
What comes next for JazzHR?
JazzHR is looking forward to continuing to improve our growth and building bigger teams in both the Waltham and Pittsburgh offices. We’re excited to accelerate our overall strategy and expand our partnerships through alliances.
