Can you share a summary on what Wellframe does?
Wellframe is a Boston-based digital health company focused on building the next generation of infrastructure for care delivery by combining clinical medicine and mobile technology. We’re using our system to deliver more personalized treatments, optimize the management of large patient populations, and dynamically organize health care resources around the needs of patients. We partner with health insurers, hospitals, device companies, and outpatient clinical settings to bring the highest standards of preventive medicine to patients with complex medical and social needs using a tech-enabled approach to care delivery.
What are some of the different technologies that the engineering team gets to work with and at what scale?
As an Engineering team, we don’t have very religious beliefs about frameworks. We are constantly looking for ways to improve. There’s always the opportunity to join the team and have a large impact, especially with the openness of our end product. However, our current tech stack includes rails for the backend, React and ES6 JavaScript for the frontend, Kubernetes and GCP for deployment and mobile development on Android and iOS. We are also currently in the process of planning out some Java and Kotlin microservices.
What are some of the interesting projects that the engineering team is tackling?
The team is moving towards automating a lot of processes. This move covers many areas and leaves a lot of room for discovery for all of us. We just finished the large project of moving from MySQL to PostgreSQL, a large change made over a short period, but one that will have benefits for Wellframe going forward. We’re excited about the potential for intriguing integrations in the future with devices and medical software systems. On the data side, we’re working on predictive modeling for our care programs.
Does your engineering team have a chance to work on projects outside of their day-to-day responsibilities? For example - skunk work projects, open source projects?
If time allows, we are encouraged to explore and try different things. Recently, one of our mobile engineers completed a cool side project: when you shook his phone, it translated to Spanish. He worked on the project just to see the capabilities of Google translate. We also have weekly Lunch and Learns for deep dives into topics to help the team develop.
What is the culture like at Wellframe for the engineering team?
At Wellframe, people check their egos at the door. The culture is all about tenacity, collaboration, and humility. Everyone knows what they are doing, but there is also a lot of willingness to jump in and help each other. We appreciate the encouragement to cross-train and always keep learning. The mobile team is even training right now on our web application to provide backup. Our team is also very mission-driven, it’s great to be a part of something that is helping people.
What can a potential employee expect during the interview process?
Our interviews reflect our values, and we look for people who have humility and a willingness to collaborate. There is a lot of problem-solving in our interviews; we think about a problem with the candidate, and hopefully he or she finds a solution that is a little outside the box. We also will present a project to a candidate and have he or she walk us through how they would plan it. We try to collaborate with this person for a few hours to get a sense of how they work and why.
What are some fun activities that Engineering does as a team?
We have team lunches twice a month, along with the Lunch and Learn sessions every week. We also go on team outings together, including a recent one to VR Mind Trek.

Everyone usually has headphones on but enjoys listening to pop, indie, classic rock, alternative, jazz, classical, acoustic blues, funk, and ambient playlists to concentrate when coding.
Who has the cleanest desk and who has the messiest desk?
The mobile team has the messiest desks, but the dash team is usually the cleanest.
