EdX is a nonprofit, open-source online learning destination founded by Harvard and MIT that offers free, high-quality courses to anyone, anywhere. Since our inception in the spring of 2012, edX has grown to include more than 140 highly acclaimed international institutions, offering 2,000+ courses with more continually being added.
edX is focused on transforming online and on-campus learning through groundbreaking methodologies, game-like experiences and cutting-edge research on an open-source platform. Based in Cambridge, MA edX is focused on people, not profit.

Jobs at edX
Anant Agarwal is the CEO of edX, an online learning destination founded by Harvard and MIT. Anant taught the first edX course on circuits and electronics from MIT, which drew 155,000 students from 162 countries. He has served as the director of CSAIL, MIT's Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, and is a professor of electrical engineering and computer science at MIT. He is a successful serial entrepreneur, having co-founded several companies including Tilera Corporation, which created the Tile multicore processor, and Virtual Machine Works.
Anant won the Maurice Wilkes prize for computer architecture, and MIT's Smullin and Jamieson prizes for teaching. He holds a Guinness World Record for the largest microphone array, and is an author of the textbook "Foundations of Analog and Digital Electronic Circuits."
Scientific American selected his work on organic computing as one of 10 World- Changing Ideas in 2011, and he was named in Forbes' list of top 15 education innovators in 2012. Anant, a pioneer in computer architecture, is a member of the National Academy of Engineering, a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and a fellow of the ACM.
He hacks on WebSim, an online circuits laboratory, in his spare time. Anant holds a Ph.D. from Stanford and a bachelor's from IIT Madras. Anant's twitter handle is @agarwaledu.
Adam Medros is President and Chief Operating Officer at edX, overseeing the day-to-day management and oversight of edX’s operations, contributing to edX’s strategy and growth. Adam brings extensive operational expertise to power our innovation and growth at a global scale. He will lead the effort of taking our current success to the next level; transforming education in the learner, university, and business setting.
Prior to joining edX, Adam was Senior Vice President, Global Product at TripAdvisor, and a member of the executive management team. Prior to joining TripAdvisor, Adam held Senior Analyst and Product Manager positions at Nordstrom.com, Amazon.com, and The Parthenon Group. He serves on the Board of Directors of Wordstream and was previously Chairman of the Board of the Massachusetts Innovation & Technology Exchange (MITX). Adam holds an MBA from Harvard Business School and a bachelor’s degree in Economics and German with Honors from Dartmouth College.
Chief Technology Officer
As Chief Technology Officer at edX, Mark leads our overall technology strategy and engineering efforts. Prior to joining edX, Mark was CTO, Afternic at GoDaddy where he led the development of their domain aftermarket products. He served as CTO at NameMedia which GoDaddy partially acquired. He has also held engineering leadership roles at Oracle, AltaVista and Gerson Lehrman Group. He has led engineering for large scale online business in each of these roles, and plans to apply the same creative technological approaches to the challenges at edX. Mark holds a B.S. in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from MIT, and an M.S. in Computer Science from Stanford University. Mark spends most of his free time with his family and occasionally running marathons.
Vice President of Education Services
As vice president of education services at edX, Kathy directs and oversees the management of the course development teams and is responsible for university relations with edX consortium members. She brings extensive experience as a top executive in the software and financial services industries. Most recently in charge of global services at Courion Corporation, Kathy has a nationally recognized track record of success in expanding and streamlining businesses. She has worked in long-established businesses as well as start-ups, and brings her valued business acumen and organizational talents to edX. When she is not at edX, Kathy enjoys tennis, swimming, rowing, cycling, and watching her son play hockey. She holds a B.A. in economics from the College of the Holy Cross.
Vice President of Business Development
Lee Rubenstein serves as our edX VP of Business Development. He leads our engagements with prospects and partners including Foundations, NGO’s, Corporations, and Governments both local and international. Lee has been building, running, and advising global businesses in the learning, communications, and media space for 20+ years. Most recently he served 5 years as President and COO of TBA Global, and as an advisor to several companies in the online entertainment space. Lee’s career has been focused on incorporating innovative technology and strategy to assist high profile brands improve their business results through education, communications, strategy and media. Lee was part of the first executive team to take an ‘experiential’ communications corporation public and then went on to establish, build, and lead various global communication and learning companies in the US and Europe for agency holding companies. Lee was also part of the executive team that recast TrainingNet into THINQ Learning solutions, an LMS company later sold to Saba. Lee is a graduate of Boston University, and serves on the Board of Governors of Tufts Medical Center, and the Corporate Advisory Council of Massachusetts College of Art and Design.
Vice President of Strategic Partnerships
Johannes Heinlein is vice president of strategic partnerships for edX, leading university partnership and collaboration initiatives. In this role, Johannes works directly with the edX president and board on identifying and executing strategy. Prior to joining edX, Johannes served as director in the Office of the President and Provost of Harvard University where he was responsible for the planning and execution of university-wide transformations in strategy and operations. Prior to joining Harvard, Johannes worked in the public sector and for global industry leaders, to develop and implement change management and program strategies. He has lived and worked in Europe, Asia and North America. Johannes holds degrees from the University of Hamburg, Germany, the University of Edinburgh, Scotland and the University of Strathclyde, Scotland. Johannes is married with two children and calls Boston his home.
Vice President and General Counsel
Nell Ma'luf is Vice President and General Counsel of edX, overseeing all legal and regulatory matters and providing strategic counsel on business development and partnerships with higher education institutions and corporations. Prior to edX, Nell served in senior legal roles at Analysis Group, Inc. and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Massachusetts, Inc., where she gained broad experience advising leadership teams on strategic initiatives, transactional matters, intellectual property, compliance and risk management. Her practice started at Mintz Levin in Boston, after which she clerked for the Honorable Rya W. Zobel in the US District Court, District of Massachusetts. Nell holds an A.B. in Statistics from Harvard College and a J.D. from Boston University School of Law.
Director of Academics and Research
Nina Huntemann is director of academics and research at edX. In this role, Nina is leading cross institution faculty initiatives, developing curriculum strategies and providing pedagogical expertise, managing educational policy projects, and facilitating research across edX university partners. Nina has over 15 years of college-level teaching, program administration, and faculty development experience. Prior to joining edX, she was an associate professor in the Department of Communication and Journalism at Suffolk University in Boston where she taught courses and published research in digital media studies. Nina received her Ph.D. in communication at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. She is also co-director of Women in Games Boston, a professional network for women working in the digital games industry. Outside of work, Nina enjoys cycling, baking, and hiking with her Welsh terrier, Penny.

Together with over 110 partners, including the world’s best universities, colleges and organizations, edX offers interactive online classes and MOOCs to learners across the world. Anyone, anywhere with a desire to learn, and an internet connection, can take high-quality courses on edX for free.
EdX courses are created by our prestigious partners, like Harvard, Oxford, UC Berkeley, Microsoft and more, and cover a wide array of topics, from introductory courses to career-focused learning. Our most popular course subject areas are computer science, engineering, humanities, business management and statistics and data analysis. In addition, we offer courses in subjects across all disciplines, from economics, finance, marketing and entrepreneurship to languages, history, philosophy and writing.
Through our work with prestigious universities, and top corporations, edX develops programs in the most in-demand fields to empower learners and professionals to gain deep, career-relevant knowledge that allows them to improve their lives and advance their careers.
For example, the MicroMasters initiative offers a credential with a pathway to credit for on-campus or online programs and helps learners launch or advance their careers, and MOOC programs, like XSeries, offer a deep dive into exciting, career-oriented subjects.
Who are the end users of your products?
Our end users are learners around the globe. Our edX learning community is over ten million strong. Our learners come from all over the world, from all walks of life and from a wide range of ages, from 7 to 96. We currently have learners from every country on every continent.
Regardless of where they are from, all learners come to edX to learn something new and improve their lives - whether they are looking to advance in their careers or simply foster their love of lifelong learning.
What are your plans for growth in terms of hiring in 2017 and what positions?
EdX is growing in a number of business areas. We plan to add about 30 people before our fiscal year ends in July. Currently, we have positions open in engineering, education services, marketing and business development.

Since edX is a non-profit, can you talk about the social mission and impact which comes along with working at edX?
EdX is the only leading MOOC provider that is both nonprofit and open source. Open edX is the open-source platform that powers edX courses and is freely available. With Open edX, educators and technologists can build learning tools and contribute new features to the platform, creating innovative solutions to benefit students everywhere.

What types of activities are employees involved in at or outside the office?
We do daily push up sessions in the office to get our energy levels rising, but when we need to find a moment of zen, we turn to our meditation group. Group trips to karaoke or pool night are another fun way that we relax. We’ve also been known to rent out entire movie theaters for Star Wars movies or to throw a party at Fenway. On a typical day, we often sit together in the cafe and enjoy our daily free lunches while checking out the views of Cambridge.
Share some fun facts about your employees.
1. One of our engineers was a guest on Jeopardy! and is now a highly sought after pick for trivia teams.
2. Our CEO’s Executive Assistant sang vocals on a song featured in Rock Band.
3. Two of our employees are aerial performers, while another employee's family has been in the carnival business ever since moving to the US.
4. Our CEO and founder, who is an MIT Professor, used to be a chicken farmer, and one of our engineers has his own hobby farm.
5. Last, one of the engineers on our Tools team can be dropped in the New England woods and survive without poisoning himself. We may ask him to train the rest of us on this!

What’s in your fridge?
We have a fully stocked fridge on both floors. You can always find a variety of soda, seltzer water, and juice. We also have fresh fruit and an endless supply of healthy (and not so healthy) snacks! The real perk is our coffee machine at the puzzle bar. It has over 50 different drink options. Rumor has it that option #28 is the best! Coffee and Cheez-It’s are a regular and acceptable pairing here at edX.
Star Wars or Star Trek?
Both! All of our conference rooms are named after fictional universities. You can book a meeting in Jedi Temple, Starfleet Academy, or even Hogwarts.
Favorite employee perk?
Free lunches from great local restaurants, commuting discounts, and tuition reimbursement, as well as free courses on edX that are open to employees and, for that matter, all learners everywhere!
What famous movie character best describes your culture?
