Who We Are
ButcherBox is a fast-paced, rapidly-growing company headquartered in Brighton, MA. At ButcherBox, we believe in better. That’s why we deliver 100% grass-fed, grass-finished beef, free-range organic chicken, heritage-breed pork, and wild-caught seafood directly to our members’ doors. All of our products are humanely raised or wild-caught and never given antibiotics or added hormones ever.
We’re working to build a world that’s better for all, and we’re inviting everyone to come along. For us, better means treating our planet with respect. It means improving the lives of animals and the livelihoods of farmers. It means never cutting corners when it comes to doing business. Ultimately, it means better meals, enjoyed together. Our team is made up of people who collaborate and support one another. We’re always looking for outstanding people to join our mission!
Our Engineering Team
Our software engineering team is responsible for the systems that run our business. We maintain many different codebases - from the services and third-party integrations that handle subscriptions, billing, and shipping, to our customer-facing e-commerce website.
We work in two-week agile sprints, including daily standup meetings and bi-weekly planning and retrospective meetings. We value strong attention to detail, initiative, curiosity, humility, and open communication. Because we believe in personal accountability, we place a large amount of autonomy on our engineers.
Who You Are
Role
We're looking for an experienced engineer to step in, find issues that need a champion, and work to see them resolved. This may mean doing some discovery, then scoping a project for another team to tackle, or it might mean rolling up their sleeves and improving the code themselves. This person should be invested in the success of the teams around them, proactively supporting other engineers, sharing knowledge and fostering good communication.
Experience
Our ideal candidate will have a very strong understanding of programming best-practices and design patterns. Most of our teams are full-stack, so broad engineering experience and/or an ability to learn quickly to fill gaps in knowledge is ideal. Our team uses PHP, React, Node, Go, Python, MySQL and Docker. Experience in these technologies is great, but not required. Familiarity with common frameworks is preferable too.
What Success Looks Like
By the 90-day point, we expect that a new Staff Engineer will have familiarized enough with our current tech stack, tools, and processes that they can begin to suggest improvements. They should be designing and implementing increasingly larger features, challenging the team processes and looking for ways to improve upon them.
Six months in, a Staff Engineer on our team should have a thorough understanding of our entire stack, how the pieces function together, and the strengths and limitations of our current implementations. Most of their focus will now be on identifying and championing system-level challenges.
What We Offer
Our Values
ButcherBox strives to maintain a supportive and encouraging environment. All of our thoughts and actions revolve around the lenses of our core values, which are accountable, authentic, humble, relentless improvement, and member-obsessed. We also value autonomy and transparency, and allow our employees access to all levels of the organization. We're an equal opportunity employer, and we're proud of the steps we've taken and continue to take to promote diversity and inclusion in our workplace. We're open to remote work, and even encourage our in-office employees to work from home a couple days a week.
*Due to current circumstances regarding COVID-19, all of our employees are working 100% remotely for the foreseeable future
