POSITION TITLE: VP, Talent & Career Development

We are looking for a VP of Talent Management & Career Development to shape and implement strategies that will expand our ability to attract, align, develop and inspire the highest performing team in healthcare technology.

The VP, Talent & Career Development will work as part of the HR Leadership Team, with responsibility to engage key stakeholders to design and deploy leader training and career development programs, build succession plans and craft internal career development programs and process that align with our robust talent strategy. To be successful in this role, you should have a solid understanding of talent acquisition but most importantly a passion to think creatively and operationalize early career programs and internal talent review processes to support career development.

Ultimately, you will lead a talented team (Talent Acquisition, Campus & Early Career Programs, L&D) and work across our highly collaborative organization to build a high performing, diverse talent pipeline that supports our growth agenda and long-term strategic vision.


  • Work with HR team and business stakeholders to design and implement career development frameworks that foster improved talent acquisition and more seamless internal career movement within and across functions
  • Expand athenaNations practice of strategic talent management and broaden skills regarding career development at the individual, team, manager and executive leader levels through programs and rigorous, repeatable talent management processes
  • Work closely with the Campus and Early Career Program Manager to target and develop campus relationships and early career development programs to expand talent pipeline
  • Expand and measure the effectiveness of mentoring, coaching and other development investments; design ideal approach and programmatic alignment with HR and business leaders; continuously review for improvement
  • Build succession planning processes, facilitating succession discussions for senior teams and target most critical, value creation roles across the organization, driving actions and development plans for succession talent
  • Design employee promotion processes that proactively manage the talent pipeline, expanding high touch with talented individuals across athenaNation
  • Partner with Director, Diversity & Inclusion to expand the diversity within athenahealths talent pipeline
  • Develop and facilitate rigorous process for reviewing Organizational capabilities and identifying gaps aligned to our longer-term strategic plan at least annually
  • Refine as needed the performance management programs and processes to align, develop and inspire extraordinary performance across the organization
  • Oversee sourcing and hiring procedures to ensure we attract and select the highest performing and highest potential talent to achieve our goals
  • Oversee onboarding and skill building programs to ensure we align and develop our talent most effectively
  • Develop and deploy state of the talent measure with HR Analytics


  • Proven work experience in any of the Talent Management disciplines or similar role; HR Business Partner or business leadership experience is a plus
  • Strong organizational skills, hands-on experience developing stakeholder buy-in and implementing learning and development programs
  • Excellent communication skills written and verbal with particular focus on ability to present succinct, clear messages telling a story with data to a broad range of stakeholders
  • Strong influence and consulting skills to develop leader engagement
  • Proven track record as a strong collaborator and team member
  • International experience is helpful; culturally curious
  • Change leadership experience, specifically with stakeholder influence
  • Experience with performance management thought leadership
  • Systems thinker; understands organizational design and can identify critical juncture for design change that will enable different results
  • Additional certification and facilitation skills (ASTD, SHRM) a plus
