The Opportunity:

As athenahealth expands services across the continuum of care, serving hospitals is critical to our success. You will fill a critical role on our product strategy team where you will drive product direction and strategy for the hospital product in a fast-paced, adrenaline-rich environment, allowing athenahealth to drive efficiency, reduce work, and increase revenue for hospitals across the country.

Position Summary:

The Sr. Product Manager is responsible for identifying and articulating the direction and vision of the product within the overarching Products portfolio. This includes understanding the market and customer, contributing to a product vision, developing business cases, ensuring a product or set of product features meets business requirements and collaborate with other teams to tell the story of the product strategy. This position will work closely with the product team to set the direction of the product.


Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • 60% - Product Analysis & Strategy
    • Drive the product direction taking into consideration the build vs. buy vs. partner strategy
    • Understand the market activities & forces, competitive landscape, upmarket expansion and needs and applicable business models
    • Identify differentiators for how we disrupt and opportunities for product adjacencies including across the athena suite of products and services
    • Specify market requirements for current and future product functionality and services by conducting market research supported by on-going visits to customers and non-customers
    • Identify metrics and success criteria that Product Managers and Product team members should be tracking, to help ensure transparency and visibility to program success and opportunities for improvement Requesting analyses to inform backlogs and product roadmaps
    • Work collaboratively with our development partners in building a solution to support their operations and learn where we want to focus as we move upmarket
  • 40% - Product Roadmap Collaboration & Coordination
    • Partner with Product Management leaders to drive portfolio and product strategy - collaboratively work with Product Management to research and define future work for their product areas and ID'ing business opportunities that will drive product success (including build/buy decisions)
    • Collaborate with Business Development, Sales, and other internal partner leaders as needed - to define and socialize an articulated vision of the product strategy; support service expansion diligence; and analysis with M&A and potential external partner relationships
    • Establish effective relationships with R&D and other key stakeholders across athena and collaborate in understanding the market and competition of our services in order to improve product decisions and drive the strategy
    • Provide direction and input in the PRSM/portfolio planning process
    • Assist Sales, Product Marketing, and other teams in telling the story of overall strategy and direction of the Product and Services

      Education, Experience, & Skills Required

  • Bachelors Degree required; Degree (Bachelors or Masters) in Business or Product Design preferred
  • Understanding of healthcare / health IT environment preferred
  • 3-5 years relevant product management or product strategy experience
  • 5-7 years working with stakeholders in a business environment, working across cross-functional groups

The Opportunity:

You will fill a critical role on our product management team where you will drive product design and deployment of product services for our clients, and lead other team members in doing the same. You will do so in an exciting environment driven by a desire to enable more efficient and effective care.

Position Summary:

The Sr. Product Manager is responsible for ownership of complex and/or multiple product areas within their overarching Products portfolio. This includes understanding the market and customer, contributing to a product vision, developing business cases, ensuring a product or set of product features meets business requirements and driving the creation and delivery of the product. This position will work daily within scrum leaders to ensure effective definition and writing of user stories, prioritizing product backlogs, and making trade off decisions between scope and schedule.


Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • 60% Product Ownership:
    • Driving Backlog and Analysis of Product Area(s) of Ownership
    • Drive ongoing backlog allocations and prioritization of customer jobs to solve within area of responsibility
    • Ensure effective definition of epics and user stories (both individually or via direct reports), clearly articulating business requirements for the problems were trying to solve - including UX/CX/Support requirements
    • Understand the market opportunity via user needs, market forces and applicable business models; with regards to what would best serve our clients today as well as in the future
    • Identify metrics and success criteria that Product Managers and Product team members should be tracking, to help ensure transparency and visibility to program success and opportunities for improvement Requesting analyses to inform backlogs and product roadmaps
    • Partner with Product Management leaders to be the voice of product decisions within the organization
    • Represent the customer for assigned product area(s), demonstrating responsibility for end-to-end customer journey and touchpoints
    • Assist Product Management Director in ID'ing business opportunities that will drive product success (including pricing and/or build/buy decisions)
  • 40% Product Management Collaboration
    • Serve as Product Owner for 1-2 scrum teams covering our more complex product areas
    • Help to remove obstacles to effective and efficient product delivery from scrum teams
    • Establish effective relationships with key stakeholders across athena in order to streamline process of gathering ideas/inputs that improve product decisions

Position Summary:

athenaCare is the service arm of athenahealth responsible for Client Onboarding, Client Training, Performance Management and Customer Service. The Product Manager, athenaCare is responsible for understanding the service needs of athenahealth users throughout their customer lifecycle and suggesting and driving initiatives that seek to improve the effectiveness of our services as measured by increased satisfaction, performance and engagement with our core products.

The Product Manager should be a strategic thinker, an effective analyst, a good communicator and must demonstrate a strong ability to collaborate with a diverse set of stakeholders and execution partners.


Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

70% Product and Portfolio Ownership

  • Assemble, Prioritize and Drive a product roadmap, showing where and when we will invest in key initiatives, ensuring that items are aligned with broader business objectives.
  • In some cases, serve as "Product Owner" for a scrum team or the Enterprise Technology team
  • Define and write epics and user stories, clearly articulating business requirements for the problems to solve
  • Conduct user research in conjunction with our user experience team to understand the client perspective. Travel to client sites and talk with users in person to deepen that understanding.
  • Design A/B tests and manage alpha/beta programs to determine effectiveness of proposed solutions
  • Identify metrics to effectively measure success of strategies and initiatives and to bring transparency and visibility to the work
  • Make build vs. buy decisions and participate in the vendor selection process
  • Remove blockers/obstacles for execution teams

30% Cross-functional Leadership

  • Serve as a trusted advisor to the service delivery teams; understand the business challenges and help advise on key decisions.
  • Speak for the product and ensure alignment with athenaCare leadership, other key stakeholders, and the overall business strategy
  • Drive PRSM/portfolio planning process for assigned service area
