Zapata Computing, Inc. is a quantum software, services, and applications company with a mission to accelerate the quantum revolution. We are developing a quantum workflow platform to solve critical problems across a wide range of industries. Zapata’s quantum platform Orquestra® combines a powerful software platform and quantum algorithm libraries to deliver real-world solutions across a full range of classical and quantum technologies.
About the Team:
The Quantum AI team at Zapata is exploring paramount research questions in Quantum Machine Learning (QML). We investigate the interplay of trainability, generalization, and expressive power in quantum-inspired and quantum generative models as we explore paths to practical quantum advantage. The team’s effort involves the development of new algorithms and techniques, along with the release of an ever-growing proprietary software library (QML Suite), implementing them and making them available for application to real-world use cases. Recent contributions from the Quantum AI team include the following manuscripts:
- Synergy Between Quantum Circuits and Tensor Networks: Short-cutting the Race to Practical Quantum Advantage (arXiv:2208.13673)
- Symmetric Tensor Networks for Generative Modeling and Constrained Combinatorial Optimization (arXiv:2211.09121]
- Do Quantum Circuit Born Machines generalize? (arXiv:2207.13645)
- Enhancing Combinatorial Optimization with Quantum Generative Models (arXiv:2101.06250v2)
- Evaluating Generalization in Classical and Quantum Generative Models (arXiv:2201.08770)
- Generation of High-Resolution Handwritten Digits with an Ion-Trap Quantum Computer (PhysRevX.12.031010)
About the Role:
We are seeking creative, curious, and inventive problem solvers wishing to push forward their academic careers alongside our team of QML scientists and engineers for a summer internship. As a QML Research Intern, you will help design and carry out a research project to augment the performance and/or scope of our algorithms in the QML domain. You will be collaborating with other quantum application and research scientists, contributing to our dynamic, highly collaborative, and cross-disciplinary research team.
Internships during summer 2023 are preferred, but later dates will be considered case-by-case. While this position is potentially fully remote, it requires partial availability during EST time working hours. Our team highly values in-person interactions, preferring candidates willing to relocate to or occasionally visit one of our offices (Toronto, ON, or Boston, MA).
Key Responsibilities Include
- Help design and execute a research project in the QML domain with mentorship and support from senior research scientists, aiming at a publication in leading academic journals.
- Collaborate with QML Software Team to integrate scientific software into Zapata’s proprietary QML library and product.
Required Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
- Currently enrolled in M.Sc. or Ph.D. program in science or engineering related to quantum algorithms, artificial intelligence research, machine learning applications or related field.
- Knowledge or experience with quantum computing and quantum machine learning.
- Experience in one or more ML tasks, for example, generative modeling, natural language processing, reinforcement learning, or pattern recognition.
- Knowledge of Python and popular ML packages (e.g, Pytorch, Jax, Tensorflow).
Preferred Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
- Record of creative, high-quality work in AI/ML represented by peer-reviewed publications, code repositories, or scientific presentations.
- Knowledge of tensor networks (e.g., Matrix Product States) and their application in ML tasks.
- Knowledge of combinational optimization algorithms.
- Experience with high-performance computing, such as multithreading, distributed computing, or GPU programming and profiling.
- Knowledge of Julia or other programming languages (e.g. C++).
Please submit your information and upload your CV and a cover letter introducing yourself, explaining why you believe working at Zapata would enhance your career and research (in a paragraph), and describing one of your software projects (in one or two paragraphs). Please also include the contact information of two to three references.
Location: Remote or option to come into the office. We have locations in Toronto, Canada; Boston, MA; and Brentwood, TN
