Starry is seeking an experienced Network Engineer to join our rapidly growing team. You will directly support the Subscriber Services team by assisting in deployment & provisioning of fiber and wireless network equipment. Starry prides itself in managing the entire customer experience for internet delivery to the end user, from the consumer friendly Starry Station Dual Band 802.11ac router which was designed in-house, to custom networking equipment allowing us to deliver gigabit speeds over existing in-home cabling, to custom in-house designed point to multipoint wireless system for the last-mile delivery of gigabit capable wireless from a pre-5G system to a residential dwelling. This position’s scope includes turning on the flow of the bits for new buildings in which Starry Internet is deployed to. The ideal candidate will have had success configuring complex data communication systems from the ground up or growing existing systems (residential or business internet, or content servers).

 

What You’ll be Doing:

  • Work closely with the design and deployment team to bring up new sites which will range from carrier hotel fiber hubs to multiple dwelling units (MDU) to single family homes. Assist the deployment team in turn-on configuration, testing, maintenance and growth of these sites once testing is completed.

  • Continue to grow documentation and procedures for each type of new-building or new-customer bring-up.

  • Assist field operations team in troubleshooting turn-up issues and verifying new install field work is functional, build a punch-list for future site visits.

  • Work with the Starry engineering team (which custom builds our point to multipoint wireless hardware, as well solutions for in-home data distribution) to enhance the operational and deployment abilities of its products.

  • Manage configuration and upgrades of off the shelf networking equipment as well as Starry custom equipment. Implement best practices in configuration and upgrade management, including managing risk of changes, while reacting quickly to outages.

  • Work with Starry Cloud Operations Engineering to enumerate requirements and develop new tools as needed to optimize consistency in configuration and deployment of equipment.

  • Participate in on-call rotation to assist the network operations team with issues detected by monitoring or raised by a customer

  • Work with network service vendors as needed to turn up new circuits and debug existing circuits.

 

Experience and Education Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science or a related engineering technical field, or equivalent work experience

  • 3+ years experience in design and operation of high capacity networks (carrier or content provider background preferred) providing direct internet access to customers

  • Experience with operating a network of several 10Gbps circuits and working with the service providers who operate these circuits, including debugging outages and circuit bring-up (carrier, cross connect, MTU, fiber mismatch, etc related) required

  • Experience with BGP and ipv6 preferred. Must have operated a network with internet routing tables in the past

  • Experience with dark fiber circuits (long range optics, CWDM and DWDM wavelength planning) and debugging (optical light meter, OTDR output) preferred

  • Comfortable working in a small team or startup, and sometimes ambiguous or fluid environments

  • Experience with Linux embedded system and/or server administration

  • CCNA or equivalent required.

  • Outstanding shuffleboard skills a plus
