Luminoso: Senior Research Scientist

Luminoso is expanding its research team, hiring innovative research scientists with applied experience using machine learning to create state-of-the-art techniques in natural language understanding that provide value to our customers. We use the latest techniques in vector-based semantics (including Deep Learning approaches), combined with a powerful knowledge graph, to push the boundaries of computers’ understanding of human language.


You will work with our Software Engineers to discover, invent, and build techniques that work across multiple languages and multiple domains. You stay connected to your research roots as an active contributor to the wider research community, keeping up with the literature and publishing breakthrough results.

Your work will involve modeling both the broad understanding that comes from up to terabytes of natural language data, and the targeted understanding that can be extracted from a smaller number of documents in a particular domain. Problems to be solved include automatically organizing documents into explainable topics, discovering what makes one set of documents different from another, evaluating the correctness of knowledge in a knowledge base, and recognizing the intent of a user who is talking to an automated chat system.

  • Establish scalable, efficient, reproducible processes for large scale data analyses, model development, model validation and model implementation

  • Research and implement new approaches to machine learning

  • Use vector-based semantics and transfer learning to provide valuable insight into a customer’s line of business

  • Work closely with the software engineering team to implement new models that lead to new features


  • Master’s degree in CS machine learning, statistics or a highly quantitative field

  • Experience in natural language processing, machine learning and artificial intelligence

  • Expertise in some area of ML

  • Proficiency in Python

  • Comfortable with linear algebra


  • Relevant work experience, including full time industry experience or as a researcher in a lab

  • Communication and data presentation skills

  • Experience working in a Linux environment

  • Familiarity with running deep learning algorithms on a GPU (graphics processing unit)

  • Familiarity with high-performance languages such as Rust, or Cython

  • Experience with PyTorch
