Houghton Mifflin Harcourt: Manager of Cloud Architecture

This role will have responsibility for guiding the corporate Cloud presence supporting both customer-facing and internal cloud-based tools.  Providing technical and management guidance to a team of around 4 experienced cloud professionals, the person in his role will ensure that industry best practices for cost containment, security, automation, and developer self-service are provided.

 

Duties and Responsibilities include:

People Manager

Enable and empower people to do their best work in an environment that encourages collaboration and innovation and fosters development and learning.

Build, coach, mentor, and develop a highly functioning team of cloud architects

Translate the company’s strategic vision, align group’s work, and help individuals understand their impact on HMH’s success.

Assess direct reports’ performance and partner on career planning.

Collaborate and be a catalyst, breaking down complex problems into simple solutions and leading through change.

Cloud Architecture

Produce and own the corporate cloud architecture including developing a library of deployable design patterns

Define and enforce best practices for

Cloud security

Cost containment

Cloud networking

Provide requirements to the developers on the team to build tools to enable

Developer self-service

Environment creation automation

Tagging status

Evaluate multiple cloud solutions – currently HMH is primarily an AWS shop, but there is a desire to explore cloud arbitration opportunities

With the help of the automation and monitoring team, define best practices for uptime monitoring and effective preventative alerting in an effort to achieve 100% customer uptime

Assist operations team with debugging and correcting problems with the running infrastructure

Be a resource for building support for the Cloud within and across the business

 

Desired Skills and Experience:

Deep understanding of various cloud technologies, particularly AWS

Formal experience as a software developer leveraging cloud technologies

Demonstrated knowledge of DevOps tool chains and processes

Knowledge of a variety of programming languages (Java, JavaScript, Ruby, etc)

Ability to review and comment on contracts, particularly as relates to security commitments and SLAs

Comprehensive knowledge of industry standard security best practices

Experience with a variety of DB technologies such as MySQL, Oracle, and noSQL DBs

Strong whiteboard and consultative skills with an ability to review a variety of possible solutions, explain them to stakeholders, and guide towards the best choice

Knowledge of one or more automation technologies (Terraform, Chef, Salt, Puppet, etc)

Previous experience in a team leadership or management role

Able to create and describe detailed architectural diagrams and descriptions

Comfortable presenting in front of senior management and peers

Familiar with guiding the work of other cloud engineers

Provide training classes in various cloud technologies to other HMHers

 

Physical Requirements

Might be in a stationary position for a considerable time (sitting and/or standing).

The person in this position needs to move about inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc.

Constantly operates a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine, and computer printer.

Must be able to collaborate with colleagues via face to face, conference calls, and online meetings.
