We are looking for a Lead Windows DevOps Engineer to join our Windows team within our Infrastructure as a Service division. IaaS ensures the continuous availability of the technologies and systems that are the foundation of athenahealths services. We are directly responsible for thousands of servers, petabytes of storage, and handling thousands of web requests per second, all while sustaining growth at a meteoric rate. We enable an operating system for the medical office that removes administrative complexity, leaving doctors free to practice medicine. But enough about us; lets talk about you.

You are an engineer with a passion for automating legacy infrastructure. Manual processes irk you, so you take the time upfront to develop a solution to automate them in as simplistic fashion as possible. You love working in a large environment so you can solve challenges that become more complex with scale. The Team: We are a bunch of engineers who are passionate about reliability, automation, and scalability in a hybrid cloud environment. We use an agile-based framework to execute our work, ensuring we are always focused on the most important and impactful needs of the business. We support systems in both the private and public cloud and make data-driven decisions based on which one best suits the needs of the business. We are relentless in automating manual, repetitive work so we can focus on projects that help move the business forward.


  • Provide technical guidance to application teams helping ensure their products and services are highly available, performant, secure and scalable.

  • Manage and support over 800 Windows servers that run SQL Server, IIS web services, file services, and other mission critical applications.

  • Employ creativity & critical thinking to design elegant solutions to complex problems.

  • Identify and reduce manual work through automation by applying a code first mentality.

  • Develop proper tests for solutions to ensure they work as designed.

  • Perform peer code reviews in order to ensure quality standards.

  • Participate and contribute to scrum meetings i.e. stand-ups, sprint planning

  • Participate in a 24 x 7 on-call schedule responding to critical events and situations outside normal work hours.

Typical Qualifications

  • 7+ years of technical experience around the Windows Server administration with expertise in Active Directory, Group Policy, clustering, etc.

  • Proficiency in modern programming or scripting languages such as C#, PowerShell

  • Experience managing production infrastructure in a major cloud provider (AWS, Azure, GCP) is a plus.

  • Familiarity with CI\CD software and tools such as Git, Jenkins, Artifactory, Azure DevOps a plus

  • Experience managing large fleets of Windows servers with configuration management tools like Puppet, Chef, or Ansible is a plus.

  • Familiarity with behavior driven development test frameworks such as Pester or Selenium a plus
