Job Post

Director, Engineering

Everbridge
25 Corporate Dr., 4th Fl
Burlington, MA 01803

Everbridge makes a difference during the most difficult times and challenging situations.  Our people are dedicated to solving problems.  Our software was built to save lives. Our unifying mission is to keep people safe and businesses running.

Headquartered in the great city of Boston, with operations all over the world, our team of 500+ dedicated employees support over 3,700 global customers every day in their most crucial moments. During public safety threats such as active shooter situations, terrorist attacks or severe weather conditions, as well as critical business events such as IT outages or cyber-attack incidents, customers rely on our SaaS-based platform to quickly and reliably aggregate and assess threat data, locate people at risk and responders able to assist, automate the execution of pre-defined communications processes, and track progress on executing response plans.

Everbridge is looking for a Software Engineering Director who is technically capable (able to participate in code reviews, not expected to code) and has a business/entrepreneurial sense.  We’d like to hire a Director who has built engineering teams, has a bias for action, finds satisfaction in others success, and is eager to learn and lead change. Here’s a bit on our evolution:

While Everbridge primarily uses Java, this team (and some of our other acquisitions) primarily uses .NET. We use some relational databases (PostgreSQL and SQL Server) and are moving appropriately to noSQL and streaming solutions (e.g. MongoDB and Kafka). Our front-end is primarily JavaScript.

From a process standpoint, we started our transition to Agile in early 2017. We are now beginning a SAFe adoption – but want to make sure that we don’t get overly structured or heavy-handed with it. We are strengthening our DevOps and are rapidly moving toward IaC.

About the Team:

In this role you will manage a team based in McLean, VA and partner with teams around the world, particularly our Lansing, Boston, and Pasadena groups. This critical role will help our McLean team grow and integrate with the rest of Everbridge to achieve long-term business and technical objectives.

Job Duties:

As Director you’ll be responsible for 3 things: Providing technical leadership, building a cohesive and high performing team, partnering with other Engineering organizations. All other duties will stem from these objectives. Some highlights include:

  • Keep a strong eye on the customer’s needs, with a focus on providing long-term value.
  • Evaluate and ensure the technical effectiveness of the platform - scalability, maintainability, cost to deliver, and operability.
  • Mentor managers and senior technical contributors to achieve balance between speed to market, architectural excellence, and maintainability with a focus on company ROI.
  • Develop a partnership with senior technical contributors, including the Chief Architect, to influence and help implement the technical vision.
  • Incorporate feedback from managers and individual contributors into overall team vision. Build partnership with other Engineering, Operational, and Product leaders
  • Have trusting, coaching relationships with team members. Motivate, set expectations, and help team members to work together so that the team is highly productive and collaborative.
  • Work with peers to share best practices and alignment to help the organization move to the next level. Work with superiors to plan and evaluate the team together. Model the philosophy that good ideas come from everywhere and be seen as a partner to colleagues at all levels. Able to create and execute long-term plans.

Qualifications:

  • Confidence running multiple software teams, including dealing with multiple challenges (e.g. building a team).
  • Comfort working in a complex, technical environment, where you had to work with multiple stakeholders to drive results.
  • Solid experience as a software engineer with multiple languages. Prefer .NET and Java.
  • Agile knowledge, including dealing with defects, feature requests, and quality challenges.
  • B.S. in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related fields.
