Wiser: Director of Data Science

Our goal is to solve a messy problem elegantly and cost effectively.  Our job is to collect, categorize, and analyze lots of semi-structured data from lots of different places (20 million+ products from 500+ websites and 100,000+ retail stores across the US and Canada).  We help our customers be more competitive and make more money by discovering interesting patterns in this data they can use to their advantage.

We are looking for a hands-on Director of Data Science to lead our data science strategy and drive its execution.  If you love solving big business problems, moving fast and thinking big, you will love this role.  The right leader will not only be a strategic thinker and a strong collaborator but also a great coder and mathematician.  Our data is our greatest strength, come help us unlock the value within it and truly turn it into the “Better Decisions” for our customers.

  • 10+ years of related professional experience, with at least 2 years managing one or more software/data science teams
  • Masters or PhD in Computer Science, Statistics, or Mathematics
  • Deep knowledge of statistical and data mining techniques
  • Significant experience using statistical programming languages (R, python etc.)
  • Strong knowledge of machine learning algorithms and approaches
  • Deep SQL and RDBMS programming experience
  • Strong understanding of data warehousing and business intelligence systems
  • Strong ability to build sophisticated visualizations and present findings to stakeholders
  • Prior success defining and delivering on a data science strategy for an organization
  • Solid understanding of AWS, Linux and infrastructure concepts
  • Proven ability to learn quickly, make pragmatic decisions, and adapt to changing business needs
  • Track record of lifting and challenging teammates to higher levels of achievement
  • Focus on results: shipping software that matters to the company and the customer
  • Prior experience hiring and recruiting high quality engineers
  • Experience measuring, driving and improving the software engineering process

Bonus Points

  • Experience with non-relational data stores (document, graph, and/or time series databases)
  • Coding knowledge in additional languages such as JavaScript and Java
  • Retail/ecommerce domain knowledge

Supervisory Responsibility

  • Directly managing 1+ individual contributors
  • Hiring top-quality data scientists/machine learning engineers onto the team as-needed
  • Mentoring and growing team members into more senior roles
  • Setting goals, gathering feedback, and delivering performance reviews as part of Wiser’s career management process
