HqO: Devops Engineer

Commercial real estate is the largest asset class on the planet and is being disrupted by the same mobile-consumer wave that is changing society and the world at-large. Commercial real estate has transformed into a user experience business. We all expect premium digital experiences in every aspect of our lives, so much of which happens at work. Property managers need to understand how we, their tenant users, interact with our physical workplace and what we value in order to optimize our daily experience, thereby acquiring and retaining the most profitable tenant companies. Enter HqO.

HqO is the leading Tenant Experience platform for commercial real estate with tens of millions of square feet activated across the USA and coming soon to the UK. Our white-labeled tenant experience apps seamlessly integrate security, safely, amenities, community content, commerce, and convenience. Engagement with our apps drives analytics for property and asset managers that enable data-driven investments to optimize these experiences and stay competitive. HqO is the software layer for the built world.

About the Role

HqO has momentum and is looking to add the right talent to our strong, skilled team. Were a smart, mobile, early stage company with an entrepreneurial culture and you can have a direct impact on the future of our business, starting now.

We engineer products for both consumers and enterprises that are equally critical to our value proposition. In addition, we are evolving our technology into a true global platform for integrating thousands of service providers to address the needs of this emerging space. It takes superior technical and operational execution and problem-solving skills to make this work. This is where you come in.

As the successful candidate for this position, you will be deeply involved throughout the product infrastructure cycle from development through production. Working with an Engineering team that is rapidly growing toward and beyond 40 onshore and offshore staff, you will be a critical go-to person for knowledge, design, effectiveness, and optimization of a globally distributed AWS-based infrastructure.

As a DevOps Engineer at HqO, you will:

  • Own critical aspects of our technology operations in areas including Production, deployment process automation, monitoring, and security, especially as we roll out into Europe and Asia.
  • Ensure that as HqO continues its breakout growth, our technology platform can scale with the business in terms of technical performance as well as operationally and economically.
  • Bring your creativity to bear by proposing innovative approaches, products, and emerging technologies (e.g., new or evolving AWS services) to ensure our technical excellence.
  • Be a key member of the DevOps Guild that allows members of all of our scrum teams to learn from the experts and contribute ideas to all things DevOps.
  • Add to the spirit and culture that keeps our people happy, our team awesome, and HqO a great place to work.

Qualifications

You have substantial and demonstrable experience evolving and managing 24x7x365 production applications in the cloud. You are proficient in the common aspects and services of AWS instance types and economics, EC2 with auto-scaling, S3, ELB, RDS Aurora, ElastiCache, or their equivalents in Google Cloud Platform or Azure. Experience with analytics databases (e.g., Snowflake or another columnar DB) and associated data pipelines would also be greatly valued.

You recognize the versatility of containerization and know the tradeoffs when choosing between the various orchestration and configuration management tools. In addition to deploying applications, youve deployed infrastructure using Terraform, Cloud Formation, or similar solutions.

You probably have a favorite tool for everything and enjoy teaching your peers about them, knowing it will make life easier for them. When you cant find the right tool, you enjoy the process of building it yourself. We rely heavily on the tools weve built internally and welcome contributions.

You understand the importance of availability and delivering on our SLAs. Redundancy, fault tolerance, and high-availability are critical to any system you architect. When things break (and they will), youre calm and collected, methodically hunting for the root cause and determining the best steps to resolve the incident.

You are of course proficient with collaboration tools such as Slack, JIRA, and G-Suite or similar. Beyond those staples, the more experience with tools related to the process of defining, building, delivering, and managing great software the better.

You are someone who enjoys solving complex problems while contributing new ideas and techniques leading to continuous improvement for the team. You enjoy working closely with the engineering team to find better ways to deliver great quality software in a collaborative open environment.

You have equal passion for execution excellence and seeing your work have an impact. The team youll be joining feels the same way and is never content until the results are in. We strive to simplify and streamline, but the needs of our customers are complex by nature. You bring a demonstrated ability to manage through complexity without being overwhelmed. We move fast and win as a team. This is your comfort zone as well.

You demonstrate meticulous attention to detail in all written and oral communications. You also understand the importance of building relationships within and beyond your team. Culture and integrity are critically important to us as they are to you.

You probably have a B.S. in Computer Science or a related engineering discipline and maybe even an M.S. We value formal education, but the right experience also goes a long way. You need to know why things are, not just what they are. You also know and demonstrate that staying current is a never-ending process that requires proactive effort. You enjoy passing knowledge on and believe as we do that everyone has something to teach and something to learn.

You aspire to great things and are willing to work to get there.
