: Data Science Tech Lead - Catalog

Who We Are

Wayfairs Data Science team builds the algorithmic systems that drive our business, enhance customer experience, & improve customer loyalty. The Data Science Catalog team at Wayfair develops machine learning models to power supplier-facing decision-making with the aid of customer-facing data in: (1) extracting product tags & tag values from structured & unstructured data sources, (2) powering comparisons between large numbers of products in supplier, Wayfair, and competitor catalogs, and (3) identifying high potential SKUs early in the Wayfair lifecycle.

We partner closely with Merchandising, Catalog Operations, and Engineering to build scalable algorithmic systems responsible for sustaining an well-defined Wayfair catalog: Are there grossly incorrect tags? Does this product already exist on site? Do we promote a certain new product due to its inherent strong price-value? etc.

We are looking for a technical lead to join the Data Science Catalog team, with an emphasis on developing scalable algorithms and platforms to power Wayfairs product similarity & catalog matching agenda including Storefront, Search, Marketing, etc. Product similarity & catalog matching drive millions of dollars of GRS to our business by ensuring Wayfairs competitiveness in the market & enabling customers to easily search & find to their taste. You will be working together with other data scientists, as well as multiple merchandising and engineering teams to solve one of our most impactful and intellectually challenging data science problems at Wayfair.

What You'll Do

  • Develop product similarity models using Wayfair catalog & competitor imagery & text data sources for use across catalog, storefront, search, etc
  • Integrate model outputs into a variety of end use cases with partner DS team, i.e. enable day-zero prediction of new products as potential winner with Predicted Winners team, enable next-generation intent to search interpretation with Search team
  • Work with partner engineering teams (Catalog R&D) to build real-time models & services for widespread consumption
  • Develop the next generation of matching operations & decision support systems to automate operations in adding new products to Wayfairs catalog
  • Manage a small team of 1-3 data scientist(s) in DS Catalog Matching

What You'll Need

  • 4+ years of experience in a quantitative or technical work environment or advanced degree (PhD) in quantitative field (e.g. mathematics, economics, computer science, engineering, physics, neuroscience, operations research, etc.)
  • Machine Learning with offshore HITL experience (such as supervised/weakly supervised learning, recommendation systems, deep learning, etc.)
  • Publications with the latest Natural Language Processing algorithms strongly preferred
  • Ability to effectively work with business leads: strong communication skills, ability to synthesize conclusions for non-experts and desire to influence business decisions
  • Proficient at one or more programming languages, e.g. Python, Java, C++, etc.
  • Prior experience building scalable data processing pipelines with big data tools such as Hadoop, Hive, SQL, Spark, etc.
  • Experience with cloud compute (i.e. GCP, AWS), schedulers (i.e. Airflow), and containerization (Docker) are nice to have
  • A bias towards solving problems and an intuitive sense for how the work aligns closely with business objectives
  • Ability to thrive in a dynamic environment where there can be degrees of ambiguity
  • Ability to effectively work with business leads: strong communication skills, ability to synthesize conclusions for non-experts and desire to influence business decisions
