Cloud Engineer

PatientPing is an innovative care collaboration platform that reduces the cost of healthcare and improves patient outcomes by seamlessly connecting providers to coordinate patient care. The platform enables providers to collaborate on shared patients through a comprehensive suite of solutions and allows provider organizations, health plans, governments, individuals and the organizations supporting them to leverage real-time patient data to reach their shared goals of improving the efficiency of our healthcare system.

Job Description:

We are actively hiring a Cloud Engineer who wants to create something meaningful that will greatly improve peoples lives. This role is a unique opportunity for someone who not only wishes to architect and build superb systems, but also help evolve the Engineering department into an even more successful organization as the company scales. In this role you will work closely with engineers developing our products to ensure the performance, capacity, and reliability of PatientPings systems.

What is Cloud Engineering at PatientPing?

Cloud platforms like AWS offer engineers a nearly endless set of patterns to apply to our services. But as with any type of freedom, some choices are better than others. As part of Cloud Engineering at PatientPing you will enable, incentivize, and advocate for those better choices to help further our objectives:

Encouraging service ownership

Reducing security risks

Fostering resilience

Aiding visibility and observability

Contributing to engineering velocity

Promoting cost efficiency

To these ends, over the last several months weve made big strides towards:

Building a multi-account / infrastructure-as-code / gitops system with Terraform at its heart for managing AWS resources

Leveling-up our ability to deploy and operate our services on Kubernetes

Enabling serverless apps

Leveraging Platform-as-a-Service capabilities of AWS like managed Kafka, Elasticsearch, RDS

What You Will Do:

With all these changes come substantial complexity and new questions that you will help answer. For example, how do we:

Ensure least privilege of containerized workloads

Help service owners create dashboards and alerts to gain insight into their services and react to potential problems

Upgrade our Kubernetes backplanes and replace our worker nodes without downtime for our services

Build reliable deployment automation for Lambdas

Balance workload isolation of our services with cost-efficient bin-packing

But building capability is the relatively easy part. In any organization, the greatest challenge is how we work with others to effect change. Sitting down with the engineers building our products and listening to them describe the way they and the services they own work the things they like and need and the pain points they deal with. Youll educate and advocate for Cloud Engineerings objectives helping us drive adoption of infrastructure-as-code, container orchestration, serverless, observability tools, etc.

What Success Looks Like:

Success in 3 months...

Become familiar with the basic architecture of PatientPings services and data pipelines

Learn how we manage infrastructure and deploy services

Start to contribute fixes and small improvements

In 6 months...

Participate in design, architecture, and planning processes

Troubleshoot infrastructure, deployment, and other operational problems

Begin to extend our existing patterns in small ways

Pair-up with a teammate and work with product engineers to deploy a new service, help adopt new infrastructure or platform dependencies, add new observability capabilities, a new deployment pattern, etc.

In 12 months...

Represent Cloud Engineering in architecture reviews and

Contribute novel patterns and capabilities

Work independently with product engineers to deploy a new service, help adopt new infrastructure or platform dependencies, add new observability capabilities, a new deployment pattern, etc.

What You Need:

To be successful at this role, you would need to be proficient in at least 3 of the following:

Applying services offered by AWS, Azure, or GCP to real-world challenges

Managing cloud platforms with infrastructure-as-code tools like Terraform or Cloudformation

Operating containerized services orchestrated by Kubernetes in production

Building and maintaining continuous deployment pipelines with platforms like CodePipeline/CodeBuild, Jenkins, CircleCI, GitHub Actions...

Making infrastructure and services more observable and improving monitoring/alerting with tools like Prometheus, Grafana, Datadog, Elastic, Honeycomb, Cloudwatch, NewRelic, Sentry...

Building and deploying containerized or serverless services end-to-end

Writing automation in Python and/or Golang

What You Get:

Join one of the fastest growing health tech companies in the country

Have the autonomy to build something with an enthusiastically supportive team

Learn best practices from world class investors and advisors

Work closely with the countrys largest and most innovative health systems

Receive cash and equity compensation with health, dental, and other benefits

Employee Testimonials

Q: How does PatientPing recognize an individual's successes?

A: At PatientPing, we encourage public praise through channels like Slack and Lattice. We also set aside time for shout-outs at our weekly all-hands meeting. At our quarterly company meetings, each department recognizes one or two employees as "Star Pingers” -- we call out the company values they embody and present them with customized pins.

Mandi   –   Office Manager

Q: How have you experienced career growth?

A: I started working at PatientPing as an Office Manager/EA. Being the 6th hire at a startup means that your role knows no bounds, and I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to explore all aspects of our business from customer support to accounting. I currently support a team of over 100 employees as a Sr. People Operations Lead.

Catherine   –   Senior People Operations Lead

Q: How do you go about fostering creativity amongst your team?

A: Giving them freedom to fail. Creativity inherently means trying something new, which implies risk. We want people to feel free to take risks without feeling the fear of failure! That, and very powerful cold-brew coffee.

Jay   –   CEO

Q: What does success look like on your team?

A: The people that have been successful have these attributes. 1. Grit–they never give up. 2. Adaptability–startups change at a hyper-fast pace, people that embrace change really thrive. 3. Curiosity–they’re constantly learning and improving their skills. 4. Humility–they look at how they can improve themselves and regularly talk about their mistakes.

Brian   –   VP of Growth

What is a day in the life of an engineer at PatientPing?

Every day can be different. You can be heads down implementing a feature, solving problems with the CI infrastructure, hashing out technical designs with fellow engineers, collaborating with product managers and UX designers on solutions for our customers, or sitting in on user research calls to learn first hand about pain points that different people in the healthcare industry face. This, sprinkled with a couple of ping pong matches if you are so inclined, makes life fun and challenging in all the best ways at PatientPing.

Brenda   –   Lead Software Engineer
