Fairwinds Company Overview

Many engineering teams spend a lot of time architecting, deploying and managing their infrastructure, usually at the expense of building their companies’ products and services. However, the complexity of moving to cloud-native infrastructure is daunting to many.

Fairwinds was created to provide organizations with reliable, production-grade infrastructure and enhance their expertise with Kubernetes.  The company offers three solutions:

  • ClusterOps, a fully managed Kubernetes platform that offers 24x7 Site Reliability Engineer (SRE) support

  • ClusterOps Advisory, an advisory service to supplement your team’s expertise

  • Fairwinds Insights, subscription software providing continuous monitoring for cloud-native infrastructure and workloads

All of Fairwinds’ solutions leverage open source software and are derived from best practices informed by hundreds of production deployments.

Careers with Fairwinds

Our employees love what they do. But that isn’t the only awesome thing about being part of the Fairwinds team.

Here are a few of the major benefits…

Work remotely

Our clients are spread out across the US. So we figure there’s no point in us all being cooped up in one stuffy office. With Fairwinds, you have the chance to work remotely, giving you total flexibility. *US remote only*

Join an elite group

Expertise lies at the core of what we do. Our clients value our work because we’re the best at what we do. As part of the Fairwinds team, you’ll have the opportunity to work with (and learn from) some of the best Kubernetes Engineers in the country.

Develop yourself

Not all your time will be spent architecting. We encourage our team to spend around 20% of their working week on improving themselves, others, or their working environment. We call it “FW time”. Some of our team invest their FW time in the community, using their skills to help others.

If you’re new to Kubernetes, one of the first concepts you’ll want to familiarize yourself with is the Controller. Most Kubernetes users do not create Pods directly; instead, they create a Deployment, CronJob, StatefulSet, or other Controller which manages the Pods for them.Controller BasicsFirst, here are some Controller basics. The Kubernetes documentation uses the example that a controller is like your heat thermostat. The position of the dial is its desired state, the current temperatur...

An ingress is a resource that enables traffic to come into your Kubernetes cluster from the outside. This is usually to HTTP or HTTPS service. There are ways to map non-HTTP services to an ingress, but that is less common. This blog will only focus on HTTP and HTTPS traffic. One of the more interesting aspects of an ingress resource is that even though it is a basic primitive that ships with Kubernetes — like pods, deployments, replica sets etc., it actually requires something called an in...

The Fairwinds Commitment to Black Lives — An UpdateThe three months since George Floyd’s murder have proven that valuing and protecting black lives remains as necessary as ever. This week, we were reminded of the stark racial injustices of this country as another Black man, Jacob Blake, was shot by police in front of his three children, leaving him paralyzed and the Wisconsin community shaken. At Fairwinds, we remain committed to the Movement for Black Lives-we will continue to influenc...

Over the years in leadership at Fairwinds, I’ve been part of making decisions about hiring in-house talent or using a managed service. There are a number of situations where we hired outside. For example, payroll firms, benefits managers or marketing firms — some of it has been wonderful, other parts more painful. When our core work is intimately intertwined with what we need done, I almost always choose having someone internal. There are limitations and huge variations, however, in outsi...

Persistent Storage is HardWhen I first started getting the hang of Kubernetes, I wanted to do everything with it. After years of clicking buttons in the AWS console, the idea of having an open source, code-driven, vendor-agnostic cloud platform was incredibly exciting. So I was frustrated to learn that my coworkers — some of the strongest Kubernetes experts I’ve met — strongly advised against running databases in Kubernetes, or using it for any kind of persistent storage. They tol...
