DEI Spotlight - Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at O'Reilly

Open Jobs Company Page

One of the top goals for many companies in the tech industry is to focus on building a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive workforce. It is also one of our top goals at VentureFizz in terms of helping to support companies on this important mission.

Companies have different approaches as it relates to how they are addressing their diversity, equity, and inclusion goals, so we thought that it would be valuable to profile companies and what they are doing to accomplish their DEI initiatives.

For over 45 years, O’Reilly has provided technology and business training, knowledge, and insight to help companies succeed. Our unique network of experts and innovators share their knowledge and expertise through the company’s SaaS-based training and learning platform. O’Reilly delivers highly topical and comprehensive technology and business learning solutions to millions of users across enterprise, consumer, and university channels.

More than 5,000 companies count on our digital courses and more to guide their teams through the tools and technologies that drive business outcomes. Our live and on-demand courses are organized by skill and role, so your teams can easily find exactly what they need to succeed. Plus, they’ll earn verifiable and shareable badges that use the Open Badges 2.0 standard to show off what they’ve learned.

What is your DEI mission and objectives?

At O’Reilly, we firmly believe that diversity of perspectives, experiences, and backgrounds enhances creativity, innovation, and problem-solving capabilities. By valuing and leveraging our differences, we not only create a more enriching workplace but also position ourselves to better understand and meet the needs of our diverse customer base.

Over time, we’ve expanded our commitment to fostering diversity through a range of initiatives. These programs encompass both our internal workforce and external talent as well as members of underrepresented communities within the technology sector at large, through our diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice scholarships. Although we've achieved significant success with our current initiatives, we’re eager to elevate our efforts to a higher level.

We introduced our enhanced diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) program in 2023. The program aims to amplify our culture, which embraces diversity and encourages the full participation and engagement of every individual in our organization. It’s an integral part of our commitment to fostering an inclusive and supportive work environment.

Key objectives of our DEIB program include:

  • Amplifying awareness: Through training sessions on unconscious bias and inclusive leadership, we help foster inclusive behaviors, diminish biases, and create a safe space for open dialogue and collaboration.

  • Enhancing our inclusive culture: Our program develops and implements strategies to ensure that individuals from all backgrounds feel supported and empowered and have an equal opportunity to contribute to their full potential. This includes reviewing recruitment practices, promoting inclusive language, creating initiatives to eliminate barriers that might hinder inclusion, and building relationships with underrepresented groups. We also recently launched an updated career page that showcases the diversity of our organization.

  • Strengthening support systems: We’re committed to providing resources and support networks to address the needs of and challenges faced by specific communities within our organization. As part of our DEIB program, we’ve launched employee resource groups (ERGs) and a company-wide mentorship program. These initiatives are designed to foster a stronger sense of belonging and establish platforms for professional growth.

What is O'Reilly doing to attract a more diverse workforce?

O’Reilly continues to grow and add talent across the organization. With team members located in 11 countries, our workforce already encourages a global perspective. To cultivate a more culturally aware and inclusive environment and to strengthen relationships with colleagues, clients, vendors, and partners worldwide, last year we introduced a cross-cultural communication training to a pilot leadership group. Based on the group’s feedback, we plan to offer this training in 2024 as part of our personal and professional development program.

As we mentioned above, we’re committed to providing resources and support networks to address the needs of specific communities within our organization. Our robust DEIB program enhances our inclusive culture by supporting employees from all backgrounds and empowering them to contribute to their full potential. In 2023, as part of the program, we launched a company-wide mentorship program and employee resource groups (ERGs). Through their participation in these initiatives, our employees come together to help promote a more inclusive and respectful workplace.

We also continuously review our recruitment strategies and launch new initiatives to eliminate any barriers that impede inclusivity and belonging. We’ll continue to provide implicit bias training to all hiring managers and interviewers; use gender-neutral language in job descriptions and ensure that those descriptions are results-based; source candidates from diverse backgrounds; and build relationships with underrepresented groups.

Can you share all the different Employee Resource Groups at O'Reilly?

To get things going, we’ve created four initial ERGs:

  • InternationalConnect@O’Reilly offers a formalized setting for our global workforce to come together to bridge cultures, foster connections, and promote and celebrate our culturally rich workplace.

  • Multicultural@O’Reilly advances and promotes multicultural diversity, enhances the understanding and appreciation of different cultures, and raises awareness of cultural issues and sensitivities.

  • Pride@O’Reilly champions LGBTQ+ diversity, equity, and belonging in the workplace and fosters a supportive and inclusive environment where all LGBTQ+ individuals feel empowered to thrive.

  • Women@O'Reilly advances and promotes gender equality and representation in the workplace, cultivates an environment of mentorship and support for women's professional growth, and enhances our inclusive culture.

But that’s just the start. We recognize the need for more ERGs in the future and will continue adding new groups as we grow our program.

What other programs do you have to support your DEI initiatives?

Every year, O’Reilly’s diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice (DEIJ) scholarship program awards 500 people from underrepresented groups in tech with free subscriptions to our online curriculum for one year. By providing access to a wide range of content, learning modalities, certifications, and mentorship opportunities within the platform, O’Reilly empowers scholarship recipients to leverage the tools and resources needed to build important technical skills that will accelerate their careers.

As part of their membership, scholarship recipients receive unlimited access to all 5,000 of O’Reilly’s role-based on-demand courses plus popular live events such as the Superstream Series and a full library of O’Reilly books. Recipients also have access to top preparatory materials and practice tests for the most sought-after certifications in the industry as well as interactive labs and sandboxes that offer them the opportunity to experiment with live code in real dev environments. Additionally, recipients will have the opportunity to earn verifiable and shareable digital badges, allowing them to showcase their skills via social media and email.

Applications are now being accepted through April 1. To apply, visit: https://www.oreilly.com/diversity/scholarship-program.html

Do you have any data that you’d like to share that demonstrates your diverse workforce?

O’Reilly aims for diversity within our expert talent pool and our own workforce. In 2023, O’Reilly surpassed our established corporate diversity goal of 40% representation from groups who are underrepresented in the tech industry, achieving 50% representation in new instructors, authors, and speakers. In addition, nearly 70% of our new Superstream Series speakers in 2023 identified as members of underrepresented communities. And of the new hires who joined the company in 2023, 63% identified as members of underrepresented groups.

O’Reilly is a women-led company, and we achieved new gender milestones in the past year: 45% of our executive leadership team are women. And 50% of promoted employees in 2023 were women, compared to just 32% in the prior year.

This year, O’Reilly has set a goal that at least 50% of all new talent and new hires identify as members of underrepresented groups.

Hear From Our Employees

"I love working at an organization that, beyond recognizing the holistic value of diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives, makes a concerted effort to unbiasedly assess gaps and then address them. O’Reilly aimed to enhance our inclusive culture and launched employee resource groups (ERGs) as one of many vehicles to do it. While still in its infancy, the executive buy-in and continuous support from our People team demonstrates commitment not just in word but in action. Outside of ERGs, I appreciate our People team for also finding ways for staff to connect over common interests like ribbon-making—because, especially as a young professional, I never dreamed that I could have a strength over an executive, even if it’s only tying bunny loops.

Activities like these, while low cost, generate a massive ROI that is hard to quantify—driving progress for important tenets like company culture and employee retention. In a world where many navigate the challenges of being silenced, especially as a member of more than one underrepresented community, I find myself both lucky and empowered at O’Reilly. Because we are encouraged to create and take up space, and receive the support to do so."

 - Manny Paulino, Sales Enablement Manager, United States

"Our company's DEI initiatives have a positive impact on the work environment and culture by promoting understanding and appreciation for diversity through education. We recognize that employees come from various backgrounds, and that unconscious bias can limit our potential. By completing unconscious bias training, I've seen firsthand how it opens employees' eyes to others' perspectives, making them more valuable. This online training provides a great opportunity to learn and prepare for an increasingly more diverse society."

 - Naoko Kaneko, Assistant Accountant, Japan

Lead(H)er Profile - Jennifer Griffin Smith, Chief Market Officer at Acquia

Open Jobs Company Page

Our Lead(H)er series features impressive women leaders in the tech industry. In this Q&A, we are featuring Jennifer Griffin Smith, Chief Market Officer at Acquia.

Where did you grow up and how would you describe yourself as a child?

I grew up in the North East of England in a small mining village. It was a tight knit community where you knew everyone and kids all went to school together. I enjoyed school and I liked being with friends and family. I didn’t go on a plane until I was 15 years old - most of my family vacations were spent in France after a very very long drive! I have made up for it since then with all my travels. We relocated 15 years ago to Boston.

Before I went to University I took a gap year working 6 months in Switzerland and 6 months in Germany. I loved it and for a short time thought I might graduate and live in Germany but then I decided to stay in London!

What did you study in college and what was your first job out of school?

I studied Business Administration with German at a University just outside of London. My first job was as a customer service agent for a technology company managing customers and partners in German speaking countries. At that stage of my life I thought I would be a linguist.

Can you share the details on your career path and what were the critical moments that got you to where you are today?

I never had a hard plan of where I wanted to be and by when. I didn’t even know I wanted to go into Marketing until I got to experience a trade show first hand and then applied for my first marketing specialist position after being a customer service agent. This was a critical moment when I landed my second job with the most inspiring CMO who spent time teaching me about the practical aspects of marketing that you don’t learn at school. Lesson number 1 - Always make sure you work with people you can learn from.

I was lucky to be part of companies that were acquired by larger companies and given opportunities to take on new roles. Lesson Number 2 - don’t fear change - change can bring many opportunities. I’ve had times where I have been disappointed not getting a role or a project I really wanted but there’s always a reason for it and something better is around the corner.

Lesson number 3 - put the work in. I have always had a strong work ethic (from my mother!) - you don’t get anywhere unless you work at it. If you have an idea - put it out there, don’t be afraid to write a recommendation or take on a project - you never know where it might lead.

What is your current role and responsibilities?

As Chief Market Officer I have 2 primary roles. 1) Working with the executive team to ensure we bring  solutions to market that bring exceptional value to customers. I aim to be the voice of the customer (it helps that we use all our products internally) making sure we are always thinking outside in and not inside out and 2) to functionally lead the marketing organization including product marketing, marketing programs, field marketing, communications (AR, PR, Social) and thought leadership.

My ultimate responsibility is to ensure we meet our company goals including customer retention and financial growth.

Looking back, is this where you thought you’d be professionally?  Was it always your goal to be in this position?

Nope! I never had a goal of living in America or being a CMO. I had an opportunity and I took it. I love being a CMO. We are the connection point between the innovators (product and engineering) and the sellers. Our job is to ensure we can monetize our innovations and that includes everything from creating websites and promotions to training sellers and creating pricing packages. Every day is varied and I love working across different teams.

For people who are looking to be in a similar position, what advice would you give to others in terms of helping them achieve their career goals?

Be open, listen, take every opportunity to learn from people and don’t be afraid to give your ideas/perspectives. Find people you admire or respect and look at what they do really well. What makes them great.

What are the most important skills that you need to do your job well?

Focus & time management - it's really easy to get caught up in the things that don’t make an impact. Think about how your time is best spent.

Creativity - how to do things differently. How do you get your message heard in a “sea of sameness”

Human centric - Get to know your team. What motivates them professionally and personally. A motivated, inspired team is so much more productive and when we are productive results follow. And when results follow everyone is happy. And lifes too short not to be happy and enjoy what you do.

This is a picture of me at an Acquia event. In this picture is one of my team, 2 customers and a partner and it really captures the joy we have working together.

What do you find most interesting/rewarding about your work?  What’s the most challenging?

Seeing what our customers can achieve as a result of our technology.

Seeing people grow into new skills and take on new roles is really rewarding

Seeing a team celebrating success is like nothing else!

The most challenging - spinning all the plates at one time - balancing work and being a mom of 2 kids and 2 dogs!

What is your proudest professional accomplishment?

The amazing people I have worked with that I now call friends

Are you involved with any professional organizations outside of the company? Volunteer work?

My children keep me busy. I volunteer at my daughters dance company and my sons’ school as much as I can. My daughter is a senior and will be leaving for college this fall. They grow up quickly and time is precious so I try and spend as much time with them and their activities as possible.

I also stay connected with my peers through CMO clubs and local events.

Q&A

What do you enjoy doing in your free time?

I love my Peloton tread. I am addicted to it! If I had one thing to take to a desert island it would be my tread!

I also love traveling - give me a beach anyday!

My idea of a perfect view

How do you manage stress?

Exercising! Skiing in the winter and Peloton bootcamps! Taking trips, and being with friends

My family and I skiing in the Alps in December.

How many cups of coffee do you have in a day?

None - I don’t drink coffee but as a true Brit I have 3 cups of tea a day

My tea of choice is Twinnings English Breakfast with cold oat milk

Any book or podcast recommendations?  (professional or fun)

Nope - I get  most of my recommendations sent to me or from LinkedIn!

What advice do you have for recent college graduates?

Enjoy yourself. Don’t rush into a job for the sake of it. Before you know it you’ll have been working for 30 years!

Career Path - Dwayne McDaniel, Sr Developer Advocate at GitGuardian

Open Jobs Company Page

What do the career path and the day-in-the-life look like for a Sr Developer Advocate at GitGuardian?

We connected with Dwayne McDaniel to find out!

Interested in learning more about GitGuardian and their job openings?  Make sure to check out their company page on VentureFizz!

Where did you grow up?  What did your parents do for work?

I grew up in Northwest Ohio, in a little town near Toledo. My dad was a health and safety inspector and also a preacher. My mom worked and retired as a school cafeteria manager.

Where did you go to college?  What did you study and what were some of your initial jobs out of school?

I went to school for Computer Science at BGSU, Bowling Green State University, home of the Falcons, and 88.1FM WBGU, where I was a DJ for a few years.

I worked in a plastic injection molding company during and after college and delivered pizza, too. My first office job was as a Mortgage Quality Assurance Officer at a regional bank.

What has attributed to your success thus far and has helped propel you to the position you have now?

I love learning and solving interesting problems. I always encourage people to find work where they can learn. Given how fast cybersecurity evolves, I was really attracted to this space and GitGuardian as a company.

Can you share the high-level responsibilities of your current position as a Senior Developer Advocate at GitGuardian?

I see my mission as consisting of five words: "Help people figure stuff out."

I love helping people get to that 'ah-ha' moment of understanding a problem or a technology. I also like being a conduit for feedback into and out from the company.

This takes the form of traveling to give talks at conferences of all shapes and sizes, writing blog articles and technical materials, and making videos.  I also work with a number of our customers to get their teams up to speed on various issues and solutions.

Any tips for someone considering a career in your field?

If you crave a regular daily schedule and are not a fan of travel and conferences, stay away from DevRel (Developer Relations). But on the other hand, if you love problem-solving, talking to people to understand how to help them, and the challenge that no two days really look alike, then DevRel might be a good fit.

The best advice I have is to network, network, network! You never know where connections will lead you.

Day in the Life

Coffee, tea, or nothing?

Coffee. If I am home, I make a French press every morning. Good coffee does not need anything else. If I am on the road, any coffee is drinkable with enough sugar.

What time do you start working?

I am up and online by 7:30 am in whatever time zone I happen to be in.

What are three things that motivate you in your role?

  1. Knowing I am helping people better understand security and tech.
  2. The joy of making things. I love the creative process, though it can be frustrating at times.
  3. The fact I get to travel as much as I do. I love seeing the world and all parts of the US.

Every day is different, but can you outline what a typical day looks like for you?

There are really two kinds of days for me:

First is when I am not traveling. Those days start by catching up on Slack and email. I live in Chicago, and the company is headquartered in Paris, so a lot goes on before I wake up.  Mornings are normally hectic, and each day brings something new to tackle. In the afternoon, after the Paris office slows down, I tend to focus on content creation and planning for my trips.

The second kind of day is life on the road. I am actually writing this on a bus getting from an airport to my hotel for a conference in Pasadena, CA. The things I need to address from the Paris team and ongoing conversations continue but are responded to as I can.  At events I both attend and give talks, have hallway conversations about the latest tech trends and news, and socialize as much as I can in the evenings. I actually love the manic energy of the road. I was just saying to someone the other day that I tend to get some of my best writing done at airports.

What time do you typically wrap up the work day?

If I am home, typically around 5 or 6, depending on the day. While that sounds like a very long day, I have adopted a long lunch to run errands as I work from home. If I am on the road, whenever the networking ends and I am back in my hotel. That varies wildly.

Do you log back in at night or do you shut it down completely?

During a work week, I am always online (thanks to Android and Verizon), and sometimes you do need to reply to an email in the evenings. Weekends and days I take off are mine though, and I turn alerts off.

Any productivity hacks?

Get started on that project right now.  The longer you wait, the more weight it carries and just getting it done frees you up to work on something else, maybe more fun.

I personally live an “Inbox Zero” life, which means accepting context switching throughout my day, but I rarely ever have a pile of emails to deal with at once as a result.

What are the 3 apps that you can’t live without?

  • Slack
  • The United Airlines app
  • Lyft

What professional accomplishment are you proudest of?

I was able to speak in front of a crowd of 750 people at an event in Paris in 2017. I once got to meet Richard Stallman while I was speaking at MIT. He sold me a stuffed gnu, which I still display proudly in my home office.

Who do you admire or call upon for professional advice?

I have met so many inspiring people over the years I fear singling any of them out cause I would leave out so many.  I do have one former coworker who did the same job as me who I still have a 1 on 1 call with every couple of weeks.  He is my sounding board and a rational voice no matter what is going on. Thanks David!

There are also the folks in the Burbsec community in Chicago. It is a super supportive community that is always happy to share ideas and give feedback.

Biggest guilty pleasure song and/or artist?

Party in the U.S.A. by Miley Cyrus is one of the best songs ever written.
