Jobs at Building Engines
Tim Curran is the former CEO of Sample6, a biotech company bringing ultra-rapid pathogenic bacteria detection products to the food safety and other markets. He also serves on the board of several companies in addition to Building Engines, including Repsly Inc., Powerhouse Dynamics, and arcbazar.com. Mr. Curran is also a partner at CommonAngels Ventures.
Prior to Sample6, Mr. Curran served as CEO of Vela Systems, a field management software company in the Architecture, Engineering and Construction industry, which was acquired by Autodesk (ADSK) in June 2012. Prior to joining Vela, Tim served as CEO of Eleven Technology, the leader in next generation mobile field applications for the retail & consumer goods industry. Eleven was successfully acquired by Trimble Navigation (TRMB) in April 2006. Prior to Eleven, Mr. Curran spent five years as the number two executive of I-many, Inc., an enterprise contract management software company that grew from $6MM to $60MM in sales and went public during his tenure. Mr. Curran’s roles at I-many included EVP of Sales and Marketing and EVP of Corporate Development. Prior to I-many, Tim spent eight years with Accenture and a year with EMC Corporation.
Mr. Curran holds a BS in Chemical Engineering from Case Western Reserve University and an MBA from the University of Chicago.
Chief Marketing and Strategy Officer
Mr. Sidman has led Building Engines' expansion efforts since 2004. He oversees the company's marketing department and helps direct company strategy and product direction as well as managing a number of key client and partner relationships. Mr. Sidman is also the company's commercial real estate technology evangelist, speaking and writing regularly on the use of real estate technology to improve operations and management practices as well as creating and hosting the industry's first technology-focused podcast, CRE TechTalks. Mr. Sidman brings a diverse entrepreneurial background with a focus on developing and implementing early and expansion stage go-to-market strategy as well as sales and marketing programs. Prior to Building Engines, Mr. Sidman began his career working for Four Season's Hotels. He was a partner at Cedona Technologies, LLC where he led the company's business development efforts for their document management and media archival tools. He also founded Access Solutions International, a foreign trade consulting company and additionally co-founded and managed a Boston-based CRE services firm. Mr. Sidman holds a B.S. from Cornell University.
Chief Financial Officer
Mr. O'Connor has over 20 years of operating experience working as both a CFO and VP of Corporate Development. He’s worked for venture backed and growth stage companies in the pre-revenue stage to those with over $100M in earnings. David was most recently with Buildium, LLC, a Boston-based SaaS company in the real estate technology space, which provides accounting and operations management systems to the multifamily market. David has long experience as a CFO with Buildium; AppNeta (cloud computing); Service CEO (field service scheduling, billing); Oblicore (cloud computing); Surebridge (app outsourcing), and others. He is also an experienced investor, and consultant to technology companies with a focus on licensed software and business services with recurring revenue.
Chief Product Officer
Daniel Cozza has over 20 years of experience building product and teams in B2B software businesses. He has led product in both startups and larger, global companies. He also serves as an advisor for several early-stage technology companies in the retail and medical spaces.
Daniel has experience in a variety of industries, including payment processing, CRM, data protection and most recently, AEC. As CTO of Vela Systems, he led the design and delivery of a modern field management system for construction. Vela was successfully acquired by Autodesk, where Daniel went on to lead the construction portfolio for Autodesk. Daniel has a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science from Tufts University.
Vice President, Solutions Consulting
Mr. Maikath is in charge of the client support and services division. His primary focus is ensuring client satisfaction, but he also works closely with both the sales and development teams to collect market feedback and drive product direction. Prior to joining Building Engines, Mr. Maikath was a Technical Sales and Support Representative for MaxSea Marine Software, which provided bottom mapping software to commercial fishing boats and weather routing for large off shore yachts. He was an integral part in the company’s buyout. Mr. Maikath holds a B.A. from UVM and spent a year working for the National Marine Fisheries Service in Hawaii as an Observer, collecting data aboard the long-line tuna boats.
Vice President, Sales
Derek brings 15 years of experience in sales and sales management to Building Engines. Throughout his career he has focused on recruiting top talent, developing sales teams, as well as defining sales and go-to-market strategies. With proven success as both an individual contributor and managing sales teams at scale, Derek leads Building Engines’ commercial sales team to successfully expand into new markets, driving new strategic partnerships and revenue growth.
Prior to joining Building Engines, Derek served as VP, North American Sales at Metalogix where he successfully built and managed the field and inside sales team. He has also served in leadership positions at Axceler(acquired by Metalogix) and Percussion Software. Derek holds a bachelor’s degree in Business Adminstration from Bryant University and resides in the Boston metro area with his wife and 2 sons.
Vice President, Product Management
Ms. Saarmaa has over 25 years experience in high tech, spanning a broad range of industries including SaaS business applications, encryption, data security, international business management and advanced control systems. An executive and innovator with a passion for bringing new products to market, she built product management organzations at several Boston-area high-growth firms including Liquid Machines, High Street Partners and Active Control eXperts. She began her career at IBM where she held roles in software engineering, sales and product marketing. Ms. Saarmaa holds an MBA from the MIT Sloan School of Management with concentrations in Marketing and Finance and a BS in Computer Science and Economics from Duke University.
Ms. Saarmaa is a long-time supporter of the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, where she currently serves on the Board of Overseers.
Head of Research
over a decade, telling stories with data that help building owners and managers better serve their customers. He is a prolific writer on industry topics and a frequent speaker at educational conferences. At Building Engines, he is leading efforts to capture and share new insights gleaned from operational and tenant sentiment metrics. Before joining Building Engines in early 2016, Mr. Mobley served as a vice president at Kingsley Associates, a boutique commercial real estate consulting firm, where he led a wide variety of survey research and benchmarking projects. He later founded Koine Communications, a research and marketing firm focused in part on commercial real estate. His career also includes time as an advisor at Deloitte Consulting, as well as consulting at a leading consumer products firm and a major health insurance provider. Mr. Mobley holds a B.A. in political science and an M.B.A. from the University of South Carolina.

We try to be good citizens and volunteer regularly with a different local non-profit organization. Past events have included work with Rosie's place, Boston Parks and Recreation Department, and the Pine Street Inn and well as Animal Shelter supply drives.
