Tech Neighborhood - Davis Square, Somerville
With the smell of Redbones barbecue as much a part of the the neighborhood's identity as the sight of a confused Tufts freshmen looking for the T, the Davis Square neighborhood has one of the more unique and ecclectic vibes in all of the Boston area.
Recently, we have noticed that Davis Square is becoming a destination for startups looking looking for a Red Line alternative to the high-rent Kendall Square.
Here are some of the companies calling Davis Square-and some of the surrounding streets-home these days.
Mobile advertising and monetization platform Tapjoy have been part of the Davis Square scene since acquiring Viximo in 2012. The company kept local startup mentor Sean Lindsay from Viximo; Lindsay is currently Tapjoy's VP of Engineering.
The Echo Nest
Founded by a couple of MIT PhD's, The Echo Nest is one of the biggest "music intelligence" companies in the world. The Echo Nest has gathered over a trillion data points in order to help application developers build smarter music apps.
Evergage, formerly Apptegic, another local company to call Davis Square home, create solutions to track and respond to user behavior in real-time, throughout a potential customer's lifecycle, in order to boost conversion rates and drive customer success.
Wistia, the fast-growing professional video hosting company, seems to be popping up almost everywhere I turn on the web these days. Which is a great sign for the company. With offices right in Davis Square, Wistia seems like the ideal company for startup folks looking to get involved in a rapidly growing startup.
CAD library and platform company GrabCAD has recently opened a new office in the Davis Square area. While GrabCAD isn't actually IN the square (they are actually located on Cameron Street in Cambridge), they chose their new office because of its proximity to Davis Sqaure and all it has to offer.
Another new Davis Square resident, The Grommet relocated from Lexington and seem to be fitting in to the Davis Square scene pretty well. Their office, full of little 'grommets' was featured in one of our office tours recently.
The affordable 3D printer maker also calls the Davis Square-area home. With all the buzz surrounding 3D printing these days, FormLabs may soon out grow their current offices, but I'm sure the team is happy to be repping Davis Square for now.
StarStreet, which allows users to play fantasy sports for real money online, is also headquartered in the Davis Square neighborhood.
Wait, that can't be a picture of the StarStreet team hanging out at the office in Davis, you might say. It's not, StarStreet hold many of their end of season awards parties at the Playboy Mansion.
Greentown Labs, the clean-tech incubator is getting close to opening their new Davis Square digs. With a couple of events scheduled early next month, Greentown should be a welcome addition to the neighborhood.
Thinking Phone Networks
Thinking Phone Networks, the Unified Communications leader, is also one of those great local companies that is headquartered right outside Davis Square.
They aren't alone, Bluetrain Mobile, Ethan Bagley's USpin, and 3Play Media are all within walking distance of Davis Square as well.
