Flagship Ventures is a venture capital firm focused on creating, financing and building innovative companies. Founded in 2000, Flagship manages over $600 million in early-stage funds and operates from its offices at Kendall Square in Cambridge, MA. With an active portfolio of over 40 companies, the firm’s strategy is to balance its investments across three principal business sectors: Therapeutics, Life Science Tools & Diagnostics, and BioEnergy/Cleantech.
The Flagship investment team consists of 10 professionals and is led by co-founders Noubar Afeyan and Ed Kania. Complementing our internal team is our extensive network of academic and industrial advisors who are actively engaged in evaluating and helping develop our new ventures. During the past two decades Flagship's principals have been involved as founders or investors in many highly successful ventures including: Adnexus Therapeutics, Alere Medical, Aspect Medical, Celera Genomics, ChemGenics Pharmaceuticals, Color Kinetics, Cytyc, DataSage, Exact Sciences, Helicos Biosciences, Hypnion, IDEXX, Morphotek, PerSeptive Biosystems and TripAdvisor.

The life cycle of an entrepreneurial venture goes through three phases: design and test, build and refine, grow and harvest. At each of the phases, the Flagship Ventures team deploys experienced and focused resources, as appropriate, to maximize the potential value of the venture. The synergy between venture investment and venture creation is a key element of our strategy.
Venture Investment
* We back and help build exceptional teams focused on significant commercial opportunities enabled by market discontinuities or technology breakthroughs.
* We generally serve as lead investor, and over 80% of our investments are seed or first round.
* Our initial investment may range between $250 thousand and $5 million with a typical investment of $2.5 million to $4 million.
* We may invest up to $15-20 million during the life of a venture and typically form a syndicate that includes other leading venture firms.
Venture Creation
* Flagship Ventures has deep experience and a successful track record in the design and test phase of a new entrepreneurial venture.
* We focus on creating new ventures that are first in their category, typically incorporating significant intellectual property and potential for long-term value creation.
* Through an intense entrepreneurial seed phase, we design and validate a suitable business model for the opportunity and assemble the initial management team and advisors who can lead the new venture into the next phase and beyond.
