Big Data is a hot topic today - and the challenge it presents has resulted
in an explosion of new database technologies to store and manage it. The
instructors will discuss how big data is increasingly a challenge for
operational systems as businesses are pushed to deliver insight and
action in real-time. Students will also participate in an interactive session focused on real-world use cases.

About the Instructors:
David McFarlane, Akiban Technologies
David McFarlane is the founder of Akiban Technologies, a new kind of database
that incorporates the agility of a NoSQL document store with a
transactional SQL database. David has more than 25 years of experience
in growing early stage software companies, including IPOs and
multi-billion dollar outcomes at MRO Software and Exchange Applications.
More recently, he led Nexaweb’s global growth to profitability and
previously IMLogic's triple digit growth, which culminated in a
successful sale to Symantec. David graduated with honors from Bath
University in England, and holds a Master of Engineering degree in
Electrical and Electronic Engineering.
Bob Buffone, Yottaa
Bob Buffone is the CTO and Co-founder of Yottaa, a cloud computing company focused
on web performance. At an early age, he learned to "keep it simple,
stupid," and how good debugging skills will get you farther, faster. Bob
is a frequent speaker on the topic of website performance and security,
most recently presenting at Content Delivery Summit, JavaOne, the
Server-Side Symposium, EclipseCon, ApacheCon, AjaxWorld and the Ajax
Experience. Prior to Yottaa, he was chief architect at Nexaweb
Technologies, a pioneer in helping organizations web-enable their
business applications. Prior to Nexaweb, Bob was with Trakus,
architecting a solution for tracking sports athletes in real time.
Earlier in his career, Bob designing network communications software
for Cabletron.
