Alternatives to Angel & VC Financing: MassVentures

When: Wed December 05, 2012 9:30 am

Organization: McCarter & English, LLP

Location: Cambridge Innovation Center - One Broadway 5th Floor - Havana Training Room Cambridge, MA 02142

MassVentures (formerly the Massachusetts Technology Development Corporation) is a quasi-public corporation formed in 1978 by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to address the capital gap for start-up companies and to encourage the growth of early-stage technology firms.  In this program, Nick Pappas, a Vice President and member of the MassVentures Investment Team, will talk about the MassVentures program and discuss common mistakes entrepreneurs make when pitching to investors, such as overstating the target market and understating the competition.
Nick joined MassVentures in 2009 and has been working with early and growth stage technology companies for over 15 years, investing and advising management teams and boards of directors on market expansion, capital raising and merger and acquisition strategies. Prior to joining MassVentures, Nick was a senior technology investment banker with Oppenheimer & Co., SVB Alliant, and Canaccord Genuity (formerly Adams Harkness) both in Silicon Valley and Boston. Since joining MassVentures, Nick has been responsible for identifying investment opportunities and working closely with MassVentures’ portfolio companies. Nick is currently a board member or board observer at Ntirety, Terratherm, Libboo, Clarity Imaging, Courion, Harvest Automation, Incentive Targeting and OwnerIQ. Nick also manages MassVentures’ investments in Segterra and Vsnap.
Companies seeking MassVentures funding must be technology-driven and have: (1) a significant presence in Massachusetts; (2) a capital efficient business model; (3) a market opportunity that will support significant growth; and (4) a compelling investment thesis and value proposition. Companies backed by MassVentures have employed over 7,500 individuals in the Commonwealth with an annual estimated payroll of $612 million.
