Today, we hear from the team at clypd, a platform that automates a data-enhanced sales approach for television advertising.
We’re at a turning point in TV advertising where cable and satellite operators, television networks and video streaming services need to look beyond traditional linear advertising models to capture a piece of the exploding digital advertising market. Using proven advertising technologies in online and mobile, clypd helps bridge the gap between these two worlds and makes it a reality in television.
What is it like to work at your company in terms of your culture?
As we continue to grow and expand the company, we want to make sure that every employee feels at home and valued. We believe that happy employees lead to a productive and successful business. We’ve built the office and teams to maximize collaboration, constant learning, transparency, and fun.
clypd is a flat organization - there are not many layers of management. There are no offices - every employee (including the founders) sit in the open office area. There is constant discussion and conversation around the office. Another example is the way our engineering team is structured. Our VP of Engineering (who was named a Timmy Award finalist for Best Technology Manager), directly manages all of our engineers, from co-ops and interns to our software engineers and data science team.
Learning is ongoing and needs to be continually cultivated. To ensure that employees are always growing and learning, we host Thursday Lunch and Learns, where we bring in catered lunch and one employee each week teaches the company on a topic of their choice - whether it’s programming-related or about blogging and social media. These sessions are also kicked off with a clypd team member providing an overview of their work history as a way for us to learn more about one another.
We regularly send our employees to conferences so that we can tap into the larger engineering community and industry and regularly host meetups and community events at the clypd office.

What can people expect over the course of their career at clypd?
First, clypd is in one of the most exciting spaces out there - programmatic TV. The TV advertising market is huge - $74 billion US / $220 billion global market. We’ve built a sales platform to help TV media owners realize the full potential of their inventory. Our tools are based on two major tenets: automation and data-driven decisioning.
We are constantly learning new strategies, changing our processes, and evolving for the better. Our technology stack contains some of the most cutting-edge technologies out there. We code entirely in Go, an open-sourced programming language used by Google and some of the most innovative technology companies out there. Be prepared to work hard, have fun, adapt, and to keep on learning new things!
As a fast-paced startup, there’s hardly a dull moment at clypd - no matter which department you work in. The programmatic TV industry is moving fast, which means we have to move even faster.
However, one constant that you can expect at clypd is support. We always have each other’s backs (underneath the sarcasm and occasional teasing). No one will ever hesitate to lend a hand when you need it.
Are there any favorite activities that the employees do outside of the office?
At clypd, there’s always something going on.
We’re big fans of TUGG (Technology Underwriting the Greater Good) and regularly attend its events. We always participate in their annual Tech Gives Back - an annual day of service and the Tech Wine Charity (find us at this year’s event). Last year, we even co-hosted the first Somerville Tech Pub Crawl. The crawl started at the clypd office and moved to Davis Square pubs and bars.
Every summer, we plan a company-wide summer outing. Last summer, we headed north to Ogunquit, Maine, where we spent the day outside in the summer sunshine playing games, throwing around a frisbee, walking along the rocky beaches of Maine, and of course, drinking lots of beer. We also hold a holiday party every year. Last winter, we donned our best holiday outfits and hopped across the street to the new Rosebud restaurant to consume spectacular food and drink and got to know each other a bit better.
Aside from these tentpole internal events, we also host external events at the clypd office. Last year, clypd hosted the official livestream of TedxSomerville’s Movement event. We also hold an annual open house party, where we get to show off our awesome office to a few hundred of our closest friends.
Are there any fun facts or unique stories that you can share about clypd or individuals that work there?
We’re known to drink a lot of beer. Most recently, when Founders Brewing released its much-anticipated KBS beer, half the office nearly skipped across the street to score a few bottles.

Do you have any unique benefits or perks?
We want our employees to feel at home in the office. After all, we spend more time in the office than with our families or in our own houses. So, we’ve heavily invested in the office space.
Our open office features beautiful, custom-made desks – both more conventional desks for sitting and also standing desks. If we need a break from sitting at your desk, we also have a standing bar, which overlooks Somerville. Head to one of our couches or bean bags if you need to spread out.
To kick back and clear your head, we have a game room, which has darts, foosball, an arcade, and several gaming consoles, including PS4, Nintendo Wii, XBox, and more.
Collaboration and constant learning is important to us, which is why we host Lunch and Learns on Thursdays, and every Friday, we have Beer and Demos, where we wrap up our week by showing off our projects over a couple glasses of beer (or wine).
Other perks include unlimited time off, stock options, flexible working hours, and 27-inch Thunderbolt monitors.
What’s on tap or in your fridge?
We always have three rotating beer taps. Currently on tap, we have Maine Beer Company’s Mo, Evil Twin’s Lil’ B, and Boulevard’s Tank 7. Previous favorites include Evil Twin’s Even More Jesus, Boulevard’s Imperial Stout, The Bruery’s Oude Tart. We’re total beer nerds at clypd, so we also usually have some special bombers in the fridge. And if you prefer wine, we also have a fully stocked wine bar with wines from around the world.
If it’s before happy hour time, feel free to indulge in home-brewed iced tea and cold brew iced coffee from local roastery, Barismo - both on tap as well.
To go along with all of this, we have a fully stocked fridge and pantry full of fresh fruit and snacks to keep you going. And of course, we have an unlimited supply of M&M’s.
