I had a chance to attend the Montana Jobs Summit in Butte, Montana and watch several amazing speakers, including Elon Musk, Sheryl Sandberg, and Eric Schmidt. I spend most of my time focused on helping high growth tech companies in the Boston area hire great talent, but it was interesting to see another area in the country that is working really hard to build up their startup ecosystem. Here's an interesting stat that I learned. In 2012, Montana had 530 startups per 100,000 people. Compare that to Massachusetts, which had only had 270 startups per 100,000 people.
The conference drew about 3,000 attendees. The keynote speakers were many and included many high profile executives, in addition to the ones mentioned above. While everyone did a great job, the folks that stood out to me were definitely Musk, Sandberg and Schmidt. Elon Musk was shy but absolutely captivating. Sheryl Sandberg did the usual "leaning in," but had some great insights and Schmidt was full of search worthy facts. The speeches were captured in graphic form and “live scribed” at the event by Matt Sullivan (@TheDiffVisComms), Creative Director of the Difference Consulting Group.
