How to Discover Hidden Talent - 3 Takeaways from #DiscoverTalent14

It takes more than just freezing cold weather to keep recruiters away from a networking event! The Vistaprint Talent Acquisition team recently hosted the first-ever DiscoverTalent14 event with Shally Steckerl of The Sourcing Institute sharing his take on how to identify and source top talent. Close to 100 recruiting leaders in Boston braved the frigid temperatures to mix, mingle and share tips on how to find the best people to hire.   

Shally kept things light but very informative as he led us through his “Top Four Cures for Your Sourcing Slump”.  He focused on the importance of the right search approaches when identifying talent.  Shally was full of useful tips but his three key takeaways were:

  1. It’s all in the keywords. Your search strings should include a combination of keywords, company names, job titles and location.  This will help narrow your search to a manageable level. You should aim to get 250 results overall and if 50% of those search results appear to be viable leads, then you’ve had a successful search string.
  2. Harness the power of natural language search.  Shally said the holy grail of search is to figure out the significant phrases or terms that relate directly to the job. Ask someone directly what they do for work or look for every day words used together. For example, if you are looking for a software engineer think about how they might describe the work they’ve done and look for patterns such as “developed web applications”, “designed and implemented” or even “wrote code”.  Just relying on Boolean search strings likely won’t uncover all of the talent you are looking for.
  3. Think outside of LinkedIn.  The information you need is out there, you just need to know how to find it.  LinkedIn is a great resource for recruiters but explore the use of Google advanced search, custom search engines, and the multitude of social media sites that are at your disposal.

We only scratched the surface and as we quickly learned, Shally could spend days taking us through the world of deep web search and the art of cold calling.  There were plenty of learnings for us here at Vistaprint as we continue on our journey of growth and global expansion.  #lifeinvistaprint
